Quote from Fin24.com

"In addition to these proposed price reductions, Hayward said that Telkom's price filing would also make DSL rentals "much more affordable".

The proposed DSL 192 and 384 monthly rental is R245 from August 1 2006 - a price decrease of R25 (9.3%) on the former and R114 (31.8%) on the latter.

There are also reductions of 24.1% on the monthly rentals for DSL 512 and DSL 1024. The proposed new monthly rental for DSL 512 is R362 (down from the current R477 monthly rental) while DSL 1024 monthly rentals are set to drop by R164 to R516.

The indicated DSL prices exclude ISP costs, line rental and call charges."

So, if understand correcty REDUCED price ADSL 500MB will be R362 excl ISP, line rental & call charges. My 500MB 3G currently costs R500pm all in.

Am I missing something here?

Speedster : Nope. For that price of R362 all you get is a line capable of doing 512Kbps (or about 1/3 of the speed of HSDPA). You then still have to buy your (bandwidth) megs. This costs aprox R75-R150 per 1024 MB (1GB) of data

R399 I believe. But they dont have to pay the additional R516 p/m for ADSL 1024(Closest speed Telkom has to HSDPA)

From what I can see, you pay for a 512 ADSL line R362 line rental, plus your normal Telkom line rental (anywhere from R75 - home line to R135 - business line) plus your isp charge, around R290 on average for a 3 gig home service. Still a hellava lot more than we should be paying... compared to other countries!

Why are they still charging 2 line rentals!!!!! Absolute ripoff, since it is one line.

And the worst thing is you never get even close to 380 kbps in quiet yimes such as first thing in the morning, never mind 512. You may as well have a dialup, for all the reliability ADSL is giving at the moment. And just try getting thru to the help desk, you will be there all night! And it is always in the evening when it clogs up and doesn't respond...

When you finally do (if you're lucky) get thru, the first standard line by the call centre agent is "if we send a technician out to check, and there is no problem with the line, we will be billing you R250 for inconvenience". No need to try and ask them about the 48 hours inconvenience you have suffered not having a connection, or about the 45 minutes you sat trying to get thru to them to report it. Just like a Government dept. - We are the bad people, and to be treated like naughty deliquents for complaining! They have NO IDEA about customer service, and it will take them a lifetime to learn...

Bring on the SNO!!! And anyone else who dares to compete, may there be many!

SNO cannot compete with the giant Telkom. One good example.Telkom will be spending R30 billion on upgrading its network and SNO will spending R7 billion rolling out its netwok.

Do not be bluffed. Thats is what Telkom's books would show. The actual real investment on the hardware and infrastructure will be debateble!

I'm still confused. The total cost for 500MB 3G/HSDPA is R350. What is the total cost for 500MB on ADSL?

Total cost for 500MB on vanilla 3G (384kbps download speed) is R280. On HSDPA (1800kbps download speed(in theory)), its R350.
I think Telkom's solution works out to about R700 for a 512kbps download speed line plus 3GB of data. I ink under correction.

Perhaps the best way to work this out is to work out the price for various combinations, say increments of 500MB, then plot the graph to see at what point ADSL becomes more viable than 3g/HSDPA. Certainly, if you only use the internet for a browsing and a small amount of downloading (updates and the like), 3G seems to be more worthwhile, while for large amounts ADSL seems to be a great deal cheaper.

If anyone is prepared to work out the relative costs, then maybe we can get a good idea.
