I wonder if someone can help me or point me at someone who can assist to find a resolution.
We've been battling with what I suspect a line issue, for the better part of 2 years now. We've had numerous Telkom technicians over to troubleshoot the line. Each time they leave saying the line has been tested as fine. Sure, when they are there it's fine, but they don't test throughput or the behavior we detail. They just perform the normal speed tests and pings. And sure, while the line is up, it's fine.
The problem is this. Over the last week and a bit, the line has dropped connection a little over 50 times. The last 3 days being the worst. When it's connected, the speed is progressive till some form of disconnect happens. The router does not loose connection, the throughput just dies. You wait about a minute, then slowly it will trickle through again increasing up to the line speed for around 5/10 mins, then it repeats the disconnect scenario. Pings behave the same during that throughput. The line speed is 2 meg at the moment. It does this regardless of ISP.
This is behavior is intermittent. No discernible pattern. Ongoing now for 2 years.
I need to get this sorted as I'm moving to the same property in 2 months time where I'll need a 10+ meg line for business use over and above the existing personal line. If we can't get a stable 2 meg line, 10 is a dream.
I do know the line we're on is right at the end of it. And it runs through dense bush between 20+ properties where it joins another line. From there I loose track of it. I'm guessing that the copper needs replacing as it appears stretched by fallen trees and such. We've been on the property now for 30 years, and the line was last replaced 20 years ago. I remember vividly as they left a lot of the line on the property which we stripped as kids for "scoobywire"
Are there other affordable options other than fixed line? Affordable by mere mortals that is
Otherwise how would one go about motivating for replacing the copper?
Thanks all. Sorry for the long read.
