adsl wiring config - s.a. vs u.k.

Hey all

Quick question... I bought my ADSL router in the U.K. a few months ago. In terms of the wiring connecting this to the telephone line, do we use the same configuration as them? I'm worried that we might be using the two inner wires on the RJ11 jack whereas they use the outer two wires. This was the case when I bought a DECT phone in the U.K. a few years back. Any ideas?

Thanks!

It depends on what hemisphere your in, it's called the Coriolis effect.

You are right - Telkom does use the other two terminals that BT does not use. I just can't remember who uses the outside ones ond who uses the inside ones.

Yeah BT use a non standard wiring system and also use those stupid BT plugs instead of rj11. Telkom/international wiring standard requires the 2 inner pins be used and that is what your router will expect aswell. If you do have a telephone flylead with a bt plug on the one side then you should throw that lead away and just buy a SA one (rj11 -> rj11).

just remember once you have plugged it in, to change the vci/vpi from 0,38 (uk adsl settings) to whatever telkom uses.

this may normally be done via the web interface

Hey guys

Thanks for the input, confirms my suspicions.

Gambit, is the wiring difference only evident on the lead connecting the router and telephone line? In other words, is the actual RJ11 port on the router unproblematic? If so, I may just use the S.A. version of the lead to get around this dilemma.

If I remember correctly though, with the DECT phone, we took the British lead and just changed the wiring on the RJ11 fitting connecting to the telephone system (i.e. outer connectors for the router end, inner connectors for the telephone system end). Hope that makes sense.

neio, please explain the 'Coriolis effect'.

Thanks again!

The rj11 socket on the router will be the standard middle 2 pins. Therefore you must look at the telephone fly lead that came with your router. If that fly lead does not have a rj11 plug on each side (2 in total) with the same colour inner wires going from the 2 middle pins on the 1 rj11 plug to the middle pins of the other rj11 plug then you will need to get a new fly lead in SA. Fly leads are cheap and can be bought almost anywhere ie. pick .n pay, spar so if in doubt just buy a new one :) Also in england they use PPPOA and here we use PPPOE so don't forget to change your router settings.

One more thing, if i remember correctly the netgear i got in england came with a british split filter that had BT plugs for phone and rj11 for router. The filter did the wire conversion to make the standard j11 flylead work with my router. You may have the same deal so in that case everything will just work here except your filter.

Gambit, the lead that came with the router has two standard RJ11s (just like ours)... there appear to be four wires running from end to end. I'm just not sure if there is any cross-over effect. Unfortunately, I can't test this yet as Telkom are only due to activate ADSL on our line at the end of the month.

I think it will be a good idea to check the colour coding to make sure that pin 1 is connected to pin 1, pin 2 is connected to pin 2, etc.

Sounds like your cable will work fine. It does not matter if the wires are crossed over ie. pin1 -> pin4 , pin2 -> pin3 as long as it's not pin1 -> pin2 and pin3 -> pin4

I bought a telephone in Germany, same problem. Just replaced the rj11 connecter on one side to correspond to our setup. Works like a charm.
