ADSL without phone line

Hi guys,

A curious "fault" happened on my line. My phone stopped working for 4 days, but my ADSL was fine. I tested the phone and all the connections and everything was fine. The telkom technician that visited me said that there was a "problem" at the switchboard. This shows me that having ADSL without being able to use a phone on the line is quite possible.
Telkom still don't want me to have ADSL alone though. I still have to pay the line rental for the voiceline. This is charging me for a service I DO NOT WANT or use.
Is there not a law against this somewhere?
Let's all phone them and tell them we only want ADSL and not a voice line with it.
Oh...and yeah...they suspended my service on the last payment date and now wants to charge me a reconnection fee. I think a "lack of service" fee from my side will be required.

Cheers!

Why would you not want a voice line ? I dont understand people who want to use cellphones instead of landlines at home unless you like free minutes, business's either dont use them or put a fax machine on them.

Because I'm forced to pay r100 per month for it and I never use it for voice calls.

And then I wouldnt have broadband.

Face it - plenty of other countries offer adsl without a telephone service so there is no reason why telkom cant. They just choose not to.

You cant have ADSL without a fixed line. And unfortunately Telkom require you to pay for the rental of that line even though you dont use it for voice calls. I think ICASA is going for a one charge fee for ADSL for maintaining of the line, so u wont have to pay for the ADSL and the line rental..

well yes the system is backwards but we already know that. They are charging you for the maintenance of that fixed line which is the line rental charge, then they charge you for the use of ADSL completely seperately. What we all obviously want is one price for ADSL full stop.

you cant have it... same thing as you cant have M-Net without all the other DSTV channels on the decoder.

Their software allows you to turn a channel on and off (thats the way opentime works) but they wont allow you to buy only M-Net on the DSTV decoder.

VOIP to telkom is cheaper than telkom to telkom :p is that good enough reason?

If they(telkom) gonna ever make it a one price payment for the line, it'll probably look like this :
Instead of
R100 line rental
+R245 adsl line rentail
=R345

it will be
R345 line rental with adsl!
Yey now its just one payment, now they comply with ICASA

bet u thats what they'll do~

lol...add another thing:

+R1000 for uncapped local

so now they offer local uncapped and fully comply with the regulations :D

Um... bad example, yes you CAN only have mnet, its called a MNET decoder.
and have u never been to a hotel were they only have 4 or 5 dstv channels?

That's why you just get an M-Net decoder if you just want M-Net ;p

This is not going to happen, not for a long long time.

I don't want a phone line, simply because the handful of calls to landlines I make per month amount to less than the line rental, even if they're not covered by "free" mutes (or rather cellphone minutes that I have to pay for even if I don't use them).

I don't want a phoneline either - my phone isnt even plugged in - damn phones ring all the time at work - drives me mad - so at home it can stay unplugged. I don't make much calls, if people want me, they can call me on my cell. - simple arrangement, cheaper on my pocker, expensive to call me, thus they leave me in peace!, more internet for me : )
