AH  - take it away

One of the co-founders Boris Ivanovic, gave the Swedish broadband market a kick when in 2001 he purchased Bostream and launched a 26Mbps service, and over three years revenue jumped from $1million to $55million. The number of customers jumped from 2000 to 100,000 in those three years also.
Wake up telkom - you could make even more money by lowering prices

and wipe that smile of you face

a quote from their site (Be Unlimited)
<snip>
Give me speed that terrifies the old and exhilarates the young. Let me download life with wild abandon. Make it ludicrously affordable, that I may infuriate my friends (but easy for them to switch once they have seen the light). Bind me not by contract, but convince me to stay loyal. And give me 24/7 telephone support in case I ever feel lonely.
Don't cease to innovate. Don't give me less than the best.
And don't ever cap my dreams. </snip>

Either they have good marketing blokes, or they really mean it....I'm gonna keep an eye on this:)

doesnt work that way in this country, we dont have that many people who will buy into a high level broadband, thats why telkom makes more smaller packages than large packages, if you want even 1mbit in this country you gotta get iburst and even if 1mbit adsl is released tomorrow its a tiny segment of the overall market, the middleclass is where all the money will be made as the sa middleclass grows and right now the bulk of middle class users are on dial up. we just dont have the people or bandwidth to fuel that kind of growth, places like australia dont either and for them all thier middleclass are on cable or adsl basically, but you wont find 10mbit commercial vdsl anywhere because they cant offer it to everyone at an affordable price while still paying for bandwidth

Guys, please just remember everything here in Europe is very dense (even most of the residents).
It doesnt cost as much to lay e.g. 10sq km of cabling for adsl and the amount of people you reach with that cabling is insane. South Africa has really nice big houses, large gardens and open spaces, and I think this probably compounds the problem because half the time certain things just arent cost effective.

Perhaps, as the South African "internet population" matures and becomes larger you will see prices tumbling as demand increases, but you really shouldnt be jealous of Europe, it's a totally different ballgame. e.g. this year, for the first time since records have been kept, online sales in the UK exceeded sales from brick and mortar shops. That is the type of situation Europe is in...and that is what drives the demand for faster speeds.....I would love to see South Africa in that same situation, but it wont happen overnight will it? But when it does (and believe me...it will) then you guys will doing backflips down the highway with happiness.

I got to UK in '97, and dialup was all the rage, and forums were full of people compaining that the yanks and japanese got adsl/cable/fttp etc. Then they introduced adsl and the forums were full of people complaining that it was too expensive and the yanks and japanese have it better. Now it is getting to be more of a level playing field.

About a 6 year cycle I think...and S.A. seems to be on year 2 or year 3 of this cycle. Patience is a wondeful thing.

that make very little sense, i understand that the teledensity in europe far exceeds ours but not due to cost of cabling. it boils down to foresight and a willing to spend money on infrastructure. take the states for example, its a hugh country in bot width and height, yet they still manage to stay near the for front telecoms technology.
and the uk's upgrade cycle is super fast. bt keeps its exchanges upto-date which inturn allows for quick innovations.
there is no reason why south africa can not follow suite (i'm certain telkom has the capital initiate a project like this), that does'nt mean national coverage. start in the higher density cities and then progress from there.
i want to hear more news like this... gives a sliver of hope

There are many areas of the states where high speed broadband is not available. Dont kid yourself.

I thought using the term cabling would bring up a can of worms, perhaps I should have used "infrastructure" as a better example. My apologies.
