Hi guys,

Im looking into opening a new computer store. Would you say now is a good time to open a new store? Im situated in one of the fastest growing areas in South-Africa. We currently have 2 computer stores and also a game. I currently have a home based computer sales & services business but want to take it to the next level. Is there anybody that could share ideas?

are you looking at opening in a mall?
can you easily afford the additional overhead?
what differentiates you from the other 2 stores?

Yes Im looking at opening in a mall. Well I will be able to handle the overheads for a period of 6 to 8 months, till the business takes off. At this point everyone in town is fed-up with these other two stores, because they never have stock on anything you actually want. Also these people really don't know what they are doing. My after service is great never had any complaints since I'm very hands-on. Out of experience, people have a general negative attitude towards any IT guys in town, because they don't deliver and because most of them are on the expensive side. Pricecheck is a great website, I thinking about keeping the prices for every product as near as the pricecheck price as possible.

If you want to do something like that, you might want to take a look at doing market research in your area, as well as a feasibility analysis.

Hi Chris

Have you had any experience in the retail industry? From personal experience it's a soul sucking industry. You'll experience high staff turn over & in house theft is an ever prevelant occurrance. I'm just mentioning a few issues as you need to go into it with realistic expectations.

Look at speaking to a great insurance broker as you'll be screwed over when it comes down to the claims process. They'll help with navigating through hidden traps the insurance companies set in place & give you tips on some nice loopholes.:D

It's a very rewarding option since you're the owner but say goodbye to your social life along with public holidays & long weekends if you want to make the business a success.
