Affluent Atlantic Seaboard residents back City in fight against homeless
Cape Town - Wealthy residents from Sea Point and the Atlantic Seaboard have thrown their weight behind the City’s court fight with seven homeless people who are seeking a final interdict to prevent the City from enforcing a by-law that fines the homeless for sleeping rough on pavements and in the doorways of businesses.

Community Chest, various NGOs and the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) are supporting the seven homeless people.

It has now emerged that both the Sea Point and the Atlantic Seaboard residents have managed to raise funds to join the case. An application has been brought to enter as friends of the court in the battle with the seven street people.

Tanya Nöckler, a representative for neighbourhood watch group the Gardens Watch, has been rallying support for residents to stand by the City.

She has claimed there has been a misrepresentation of the issue ....

Are there not shelters for the homeless, I'd also be peeved if someone was sleeping at my front door or in a box outside my window when there are places for them to be looked after.

There are, but they cost money and have limited space.... so they can't cater for all the homeless people.

I'm honestly in two minds about this whole debacle. Fining the homeless is overkill in my opinion, but I do get the residents point about the criminal aspects that can come with having people rough-sleeping in the area.

Afraid I'm not in two minds - they should be moved. If they're jobless there's no need for them to be in the city.

Can't fine the homeless but by the same token they have no business there :(

they sleep in front of home entrances etc. and refuse to move sometimes, some even become aggressive. pee and poo around the place, leave used needles sometimes or liquor bottles, litter everywhere. its bin wars on garbage day.

fining them seems dumb, is it to create a record

Why did the residents not take the money that they collected to build a shelter or even pay towards a shelter?

I can understand that it can be a nuisance for people, and they pis and sht where they want to but where should they go? To the karoo and just starve and then disease spread.

The city can take some of the land they own and build a nice looking shelter. Tell the hobos to come and help with the hard labour so that they can feel proud of something that they helped with, for themselves.

Its either that or we go with the plan of @Rouxenator

This is an issue in CPT, in general. These homeless people sleep all over and the police don't want to do anything. The problem is that once the police remove them, they come back as soon as the police are gone. It would be nice if the CCID got involved, but they seem limited to certain areas of CPT only.

@The_Mowgs ....that banter thread had me thinking you're a a bit of a pie......
...but this changed my mind...best suggestion yet. These wealthy folk couldn't give 2 sh*ts....

Those residents as well as some on this thread seem to be forgetting that without a solution to find ways to help the homeless, the issue will either return or will become a problem somewhere else...

This video shows exactly where Cape Town is heading fast.
The council and residents need to reclaim the street, parks and open spaces which the alt-left De Lille allowed to slip away.
It is essential to have byelaws and to enforce bylaws to keep law and order.

They already pay rates and taxes for that reason, which go towards funding the night shelters.

The real reason why these people are homeless, is because they do not want to be helped as when they go to a shelter, they have to see a social worker whose job it is to get them rehabilitated with their families.

WHAT WE DO NOT WISH:
  • No persons under the influence or in possession of drugs, alcohol, weapons (or potentially dangerous implements) are allowed inside The Haven. Intoxicated persons or persons in possession of drugs will get a warning and have to wait outside the building of The Haven untill sober. The host of the day will record this matter in the incident book. The client is required to meet the social worker the next weekday morning.
  • If you bring in drugs, it will be destroyed in your presence. The host of the day will record this matter in the incident book. The client is required to meet the social worker the next weekday morning.
  • Possesion of weapons is not allowed. If you bring them on our premisses they will be confiscated.
  • No smoking is allowed inside any part of the building. You may smoke in the courtyards.
  • Men are not allowed to enter ladies dorms and vice versa except with permission of a host of the day.
  • Do not enter the kitchen or store rooms without permission of a supervisor.

You can't help people who don't want to be helped.

As for those "wealthy folk", the guavament has already fleeced them of 35% of their income to help other people.

I live in Sea Point and although I don't have any involvement in this, I can understand the problem.

The fellow who sleeps in front of our building gets completely sh#t faced on drugs & alcohol and goes on screaming and manic laughing fits through the night (no seriously like shouting top of the lungs). Then on bin day he overturns all the bins onto the street and leaves it like that. He is also super aggressive. The once the police confronted him he just kept calling them k word, threatening to "cut them", spitting, etc.. I can totally understand why the police have no desire to arrest him. What do you do with him?

In the city on my way back from home I also drive through Gardens and there is a nice little "community" there. Plenty of needles. Every so often I drive by and one of them is taking a sh#t on the paving. Or having a shouting match with each other.

The McDonalds hobo in Sea Point sleeps right next to the speaker for the drive through. That way he can block the speaker every so often to force money from people (no seriously). Until McDonalds finally got a security guard.

Literally a parasite on society, the fact that people actually want to defend them is a mystery to me.

I guess the idea is that you don't want the rare quiet hobo who keeps to himself to get caught in the crosshairs.
