Durban is still the busiest container port in Sub Saharan Africa but the gap is gradually narrowing. In 2005, Cape Town was the second busiest container port in Sub Saharan Africa (behind Durban) but as at 2012 Cape Town has fallen behind Lagos, Luanda and Mombasa. That said, TEUs though important, are just one measure of port traffic.

The complete list of the 36 busiest container ports here -> http://tinyurl.com/afroports

There is plenty of expansion planning and actual activity taking place across the continent. Perhaps the one that has made the most headlines has been the proposed Bagamoyo Port in Tanzania which was discussed by News24 a while back here

Will be interesting to see the 2013 numbers and where the Ngqura Container Terminal slots in. Last article I read showed that they handled 86000 TEUs in May 2013.
