Afrihost: speed Issues?

Hi guys,

Hope all is well.

I wonder if I can get any help here? or if this is normal?

So I signed up for a 10mbps uncapped account from Afrihost towards the end of October all was well. so far for November Ok, with all the netflix streaming and the downloads we reached about 114 gb.

I then changed the package over to a business 4mbps uncapped account as browsing was perfect on the 10mbps uncapped however downloading was going at like 30 to 50kbps and torrents were slow.

For a few days on the business uncapped account things were awesome, I was able to download at like 400 and sometimes peaking at 500kbps. and then all of a sudden downloads go at about 60 to 100kbps, torrents are really slow as well. but browsing and streaming are perfect.

Of course I was being shaped on the 10mbps account which I understand, but really, the downloads couldn't have dropped so rapidly.

On the business account I'm not being shaped which is why I took the package, but I can't understand why the speeds seem horrible.

anyone experience anything similar after going over 100gb?
How are other ISP's specificly openweb gold with regard to going over 100?

I'm pretty sure they throttle torrents on uncapped. I think they don't on capped.

Hi There,
The Afirhost link is quite a long one so you have a lot of reading to do.
Have you tried speaking to them and asking them?

Might be quicker than reading.
Personally I have not seen any issues on the business unshaped from Afrisam in the 2 years I have used it at home.

at the time of using the 10mbps uncapped account, and noticing the slow download speeds of between 30 and 50kbps, I have sent a PM to AfriGuy, who has been very helpful in the past with answering my questions before I actually applied for the account. But not sure if he has seen it.

You are indeed lucky with your business account from them! Glad its working well for you!

Do you let Afrihost manage the line for you? or do you pay Telkom?
I'm wondering whether letting Afrihost manage the line for me was a mistake? perhaps it might be the answer to my speed issues?

I have a 10mb uncapped. it was downloading at under 100KB. I switched to my saix account and now it is quick.

Hi There,
Yes I have them manage the line for me as well. I know a lot of people on the iste say don't do that but I was getting so frustrated holding on the line for Telkom whenI had a line issue that I decided that I had very little to loose.
So far the service has been good. I have placed calls at 6am on a sunday morning and they have responded the same day.
