Afrihost Uncapped ADSL - Shaping Newsserver/P2P - Is there a better ISP option?

For more than a month now I have endured the 5kB/s newsserver downloads on my 1Mbit line with Afrihost Uncapped ADSL, only to find that these downloads are so corrupted at these low speeds that they cannot be repaired.

Before Afrihost introduced their new shaping policy I avg'ed more than 80kB/s. Is there a better ISP for me that doesn't shape so severely?

(You know, I've got to stay up to date with my daily news *downloads* :whistling: )

For R100 more get the Afrihost Business Uncapped package. 24/7 no shaping. I changed to this package last night and so far the speeds are back to normal again 80-100kB/s

Sorry to read that you're having slow speeds with us :( Home Uncapped accounts are subjected to shaping though, however we applying more shaping than what we'd like to see at the moment.

We haven't changed any of our shaping policies, our network has seen an increase in demand which has resulted in increased shaping. We're providing more updates around this on our official Uncapped thread :)

Are all your NNTP downloads slow or only certain content?

Which account are you on? If it's a Home Uncapped account please post your shaping details here.

10mbps Home uncapped.

Shaping Policy: 12.5% Download/ 6.25% P2P

But it's picked up a lil' now so now it's sitting at 20KB/s

My shaping policy: 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P.

Download speed last 4 hours 0 kB/s.

Then I turned a 60 min Turbocharging on, 30 minutes ago, and speed still 0 kB/s after Turbocharging. Shaping policy: No shaping applied. Yeah right. I checked there's nothing wrong on my end.

0 kB/s. Turbocharging fail.

To add to this. After an entire day of downloading, the download just fails once it gets to 100% and it's unable to repair...I'm definitely starting to think the home uncapped option might not be for me if this shaping continues like this.

I don't think a shaped download would cause NNTP content to fail - takedown notices and corrupt archives do :(

It happens to me too, even with plain file downloads that are downloaded at an artificially slow speed. Slow downloading at say 5 kB/s makes the download corrupt with high probability, even when there is nothing wrong with the source.

I know because I have had slow downloads of a particular file become corrupt, but when I retry the same download on unshaped Sunday it downloads just fine.

It's a thing.

I've been 0 kB/s after posting this thread, even through the middle of the night/morning at 3 AM.

AfriGuy has traced IP's before for MyBB OP's, so I'm wondering if the drop from 5 kB/s to 0 kB/s after posting this thread is a coincidence... If not, AfriGuy, you turned the knob the wrong way around :p, you're supposed to take me to 12.5 kB/s like my shaping notice states!

If you are on 1 Mb, upgrade your uncapped account to Business Uncapped, problem solved for R100 more!

I'm just saying, I tried downloads from news servers but they give way more problems than torrents. Either you have to enter a password that wasn't provided or like you guys mentioned when downloading at a slow speed the download becomes corrupt.

Why then use news servers if torrents do the same thing with way less hassle? I've never received a corrupt download via torrents even if the torrent downloaded at 5 kB/s. What are the benefits of using news servers?

I work full-time in Ubuntu, and I don't think PeerBlock works for linux. I won't torrent without a raincoat, would rather go without my daily *news* then. Downloading files hosted by Afrihost themselves makes me feel protected in some way, as legal implications would have a significant amount of irony involved, that's why I use newsservers.

I have a 10 mbit Uncapped bundle from Afrihost.

I've downloaded 14.62 GB this month, average of 3.66 GB per day, yet I'm shaped to 12.5% download / 6.25%.

Torrents are at 20kb/sec, Hearthstone keeps on d/c'ing every 20 minutes - it's just totally ludicrous how borked Hearthstone is.

A 10mbit line can, at peak, download ~108 GB a day. So I'm using ~3.39% of that, and I'm getting shaped (in a very significant way) - it just doesn't seem fair.

If, as the Afrihost rep says above, that the volume is too high on the network, then the most logical solution is to get more bandwidth on the underlying MTN network to handle it.

Hey Noxville

We're covering topics like this in the Home Uncapped thread - I think it's a bit more relevant :)
