Stellenbosch University (US) wants to get rid of an extract from the famous Afrikaans poem "Die Beiteltjie" by NP van Wyk Louw, which was placed on a granite rock on the Tygerberg medical campus almost five decades ago.

This poem excerpt on the granite rock in front of the clinical building reads since 1974: "a chisel must be able to break stone if he is a chisel". However, US now wants to replace this famous extract with words that will represent " all of South Africa's official languages".

Michelangelo was a renowned sculptor so, probably knew a thing or 2 about mallets and chisels.

Why not just place 10 additional rocks, and quote a verse from each language on them? That would be inclusive, and could be a fantastic display. But replacing the original - thereby removing it from existence - is exclusive, no matter how you frame it.

But I am not surprised. The new south africa does indeed want to wipe all traces of Afrikaans from existence. This much is known.
