Air India unveiled orders Tuesday for 470 Boeing and Airbus passenger jets as it races to tap surging demand for increasingly affordable air travel from the nation’s growing ranks of middle-class consumers.

India’s largest international airline and second-largest domestic carrier is buying 220 Boeing aircraft valued at $34 billion. It marks the U.S. plane maker’s third-largest sale of all time, in dollar value, and its second of all time in quantity.

Air India is also buying 250 passenger jets from European plane manufacturer Airbus, with the orders championed by the leaders of the U.S., France and India.

Absolutely massive order for an airline.

Order breakdown:

Boeing
190 - 737 MAX
20 - 787 Dreamliner
10 - 777X

*Customer options, additional
50 - 737 MAX
20 - 787 Dreamliner

Airbus
40 - A350
210 - A320neo

This order alone would put them in the top 10 airline by fleet size.

Uncle Joe will be super-pleased no doubt.
Big passive win for the UK too it seems.

A significant portion of the manufacturing process for the new aircraft is expected to take place in the UK. The wings will be designed in Filton, and assembled in Broughton – which is expected to bring an additional 450 manufacturing jobs and more than £100m of investment to Wales. The large A350 aircraft are exclusively powered by Rolls-Royce XWB engines, which are assembled and tested in Derby.

That's nuts!

It's like the apron at Zurich during a Davos convention.

Air India is privately owned by the Tata Group, and last bought new planes 20 years ago:
The company lost ground to rivals, such as IndiGo and Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and other Middle Eastern carriers, which now handle much of the overseas travel to and from India.

These orders could change that, said aviation analyst Mark Martin, but the airline - which made its last aircraft purchase nearly 20 years ago - will face the challenge of rapidly modernising its operations, including software, maintenance and its systems for the new aircraft.

And there are still people who think the whole world is struggling, especially third-world and upcoming markets. Bad news suckers, it is only South Africa, Zimbabwe and Venezuela that is struggling. Mostly due to their own government policies and decisions.

The airline isn't owned by government of India.

Does not matter who owns the airline. Not a single private company in South Africa, or even a combination of all private companies that are left in the country will be in a position to make the same purchase they just did. Hence the reason why we have limited air travel left in the country. All the cause of a collapsing economy.

There never was a market for such a purchase. It would have been a dumb investment either way.
