Hi guys.

I've got a 1993 1.3 citi golf, and seeing it's getting blerry hot at the moment, I'd like to get your guys idea if it's worth while installing an aircon. What would you recommend (does it really work), and where I can get one fitted...

Cheers,
M

As stated above, it's a 1993. I'm not to phased about the power loss, just something that can keep the car cool! Even if my 0-100 drops to 21 seconds :) it's ok :)

How old's the golf?

1.3 engine and an aircon does not go together well...

My ex had aircon in a 96 1.6 citi and it acted more as air-brakes.... no matter how hot it got we just never used it because it felt as though the car was going to start running backwards!!

you can get aircon that runs off just the battery and not the engine. I used to see them advertised in PTA all the time on telephone pols. Back the it was about R1800.

Just ask around or look in the papers, Im sure you will find something like that.

Dude... just get a new car.

It's safer, the aircon will work better, and you'll be able to park the car without doing serious gym work.

Just buy a whole bunch of battery operated fans and stick them on your dash. And carry one of those water spritzer spray canisters made by Evian. Problem solved

Hehe, thanks man. I failed to mention that my 'other' car is the new ford ranger 3 litre diesel double cab. But I choose not to drive it in traffic, and put alot of mileage on it. So I chose the citi golf, for it costs R20k, en it's cheap and dependable commuter.

Those are evaporative coolers, using the evaporation of water to cool air down. They don't work very well at all.

Aircons in the old Citi Golfs were a real chop job, even when they came from VW like that. The Golf was not designed for the aircon, so you'd end up with bits sticking out in the passenger footwell. I had a Citi Sport 1.8, and the aircon was so-so at best.

I'm sure you can get electric aircons, the Honda Jazz has an electric aircon so it's definitely possible.

I saw a Citi with an aftermarket aircon installed, it was done quite well except for the giant industrial style switched hacked into the dash, and it worked but the guy doesnt use it anymore cos it needs regassing and of petrol costs I think.

I actually had an after market aircon system in the 1800 citi sport which never worked. Install was done quite nicely though. There was a small multi switch under the ashtray for switching it on and off and setting the fan speeds.

Wouldn't an electric one need a better than stock alternator to recharge the battery again then? The extra strain might just mean the thing will break sooner or later.

I also believe and I speak under correction here, but I believe the more strain you put on the alternator, the more power it zaps from the engine to charge the battery. Reason being that no matter what you do, the energy has to come from somewhere. So the more power the alternator has to provide, the harder it has to turn.

The aircon has a compressor, so an electric one would probably mean that the compressor has it's own electrical motor that will be turned by the battery's power.

I don't know if the power zapped will be less from an electric motor. But I believe the better the aircon works, the more power it will be zap, electrical or not.

The alternator is also not 100% efficient, so basically what you're doing by using an electrical motor is converting kinetic energy from the engine to electrical energy and then using that electrical energy to turn a motor, in other words converting it back to kinetic. Energy is lost in each conversion process, not destroyed(as energy can't be destroyed), but lost through inefficiencies as heat is created which is a waste.

The electrical systems might just be really crap and work badly, so they use less energy and thus don't drain as much power. But why spend money on something that hardly works. If you have to get an aircon, a conventional system will probably work better and be more efficient.

And enjoy having fsckall power and not being able to drive up even the smallest incline..

its a 1300 engine... it doesn't have enough power to drive a bolt on airconditioning motor..... but then thats probably to higher grade for you.

well my mom has a 1300 hyandai with aircon, and her car has little power to start :) but i must admit they design the aircons for this little cars well, as it only suffers a little power loss with the aircon on ( you have to go up hills in 3rd anyway :p).

compared to the bigger engines, they seem to lose quite a bit of power.

but i will admit my moms aircon doesn't make the car nearly as cold as my car or my dads, with the bigger engines.

4cer... Don't forget that aircon was designed with the car rather than being bolted on later

I have a aircon fitted in my Caddy (same as a 1600 Golf engine) and it works fine no problems. The power loss is minimal and it doesn't take up that much space in the cabin.

It was fitted when I bought it thou I wouldn't have it fitted it myself. So I think if it's done properly it should be fine apart from the fact that it's a 1300.
