In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Baleka Mbete on whether, in the 25 years since apartheid, her party has betrayed Nelson Mandela's legacy and the dreams of South Africa's rainbow nation.

Over the past quarter century, access to education has significantly improved and the rights of all South Africans to free basic healthcare has been guaranteed.

But the ANC's successes have been overshadowed by rising youth unemployment, recent xenophobic attacks on African immigrants and ongoing allegations of systemic corruption, with former President Jacob Zuma currently facing trial.

From fighting apartheid, Mbete rose to become one of South Africa's most powerful women, serving as deputy president, speaker of the National Assembly, and chair of the ANC.

We ask whether the ANC, and Mbete personally, have done enough to hold Zuma to account, and keep Mandela's dream of a united Africa alive.

Hasan and Mbete are joined by a panel of three experts:

- Makhosi Khoza - former South African politician who resigned from the ANC in 2017, after calling for President Zuma to step down
- Xolani Xala - founder of South African Business Abroad and member of the ANC
- Andrew Feinstein - former South African politician and author of 'After the Party: A Personal Journey Inside the ANC'. He is now director of Corruption Watch UK

Debate? sounded like denial and shirking responsibility with some expected stupid utterances from her side.

I actually got angry watching that.

The comment about corruption in Africa versus that of the developed countries I can agree with.

Overall the video is a little surreal, so many ironies.

What I mean is.. she dug her own hole for all to see. What people fail to understand in SA is that you getting zero sympathy being racist yet that’s exactly what people do which is what pisses me off about the minority(well unless u in Cpt it seems) that do it.

2ndly.. you know how it’s quickly pointed to that she and others say back as zuma and chronically plundered.. what do you think non-white people think when majority of white people do absolutely nothing when racism rears it’s head? It’s exactly why this forum has issues.

What some nobody says on whatsapp/facebook should not deserve nearly as much attention as a high ranking gov officials robbing the country blind, impacting on service delivery and killing thousands upon thousands of people through dumbass policies.

Racism is wrong, criminalizing calling someone a name is wrong. Secondly if you insist on criminalizing it then apply the law equally to all but that is not happening, so you end up with resentment from some, distrust in the partiality of the system and people that don't give a fsck.

Tbh, this interview kind of reminded me of the one comedian that highlighted the idiocy in our politics, laughing wheezingly. Except this is not commedy, even though some of the audience simply had to laugh at the ridiculous stances taken.

Right. It proves our priorities. Say a bad word and you are processed into he legal system and SAHRC faster than you can say flash. Yet rape a country, kill the nation, plunder the people blind and nothing happens.

In the end the ANC is very broad. But terribly shallow.

In terms of ethics. In terms of will. In terms of brains.
And the little bit of depth you find there often have misguided priorities.

Mehdi does not know the beginning of the madness that we have lived through with this lot. They think something that happened 25 years ago makes any... any... ANY!!!... wrong right.

What complete and utter arrogant person she is.
Sometimes she doesn't even bother to answer the question, just shrugs her shoulders and the host has to draw an answer from her. Not a good advert for SA at all.

Unless you're a comedian looking for fresh material.
