AKANI Simbine has become the second South African sprinter to break 10 seconds.
The University of Pretoria student won the 100m at a European Permit meet in Velenje‚ Slovenia‚ in 9.99sec on Wednesday night.
He was running into a slight headwind measured at -0.2 metres per second.
Teammate Henricho Bruintjies was runner-up in 10.15 and Gideon Trotter ended fifth in 10.61.
Simbine was 0.01sec off the 9.98sec SA record Simon Magakwe posted at the national championships in Pretoria last year.
His time surpasses the 10.06 Bruintjies had recently clocked to become the fastest South African abroad.
The 9.99 also ranks him in the top 21 in the world this year so far‚ and makes him one of 105 people on the planet ever to have broken 10sec.
Simbine lifted the SA crown earlier this year after Magakwe was banned for two years for a doping offence.
He and Bruintjies were scheduled to compete at the World Student Games in South Korea‚ which kick off on Saturday.
The first round of the 100m begins on Wednesday‚ with the final scheduled for the following day.
At the previous Games in 2013‚ compatriot Anaso Jobodwana won the 100m and 200m double. - The Times
