Cybersmart's reply...
"I have checked on the location provided by you and although it falls into the general fibre coverage area, there is no fibre infrastructure in place close enough to enable us to provision the fibre service, making your area currently not viable due to distance factor."

So Meyersdal - Vodacom and MTN are there.
OpenServe is installing like nuts in Alberton
Telkom plans is 2022 to have Alberton on their fiber backbone
You can get DarkFiber business (they own 95% of fiber in Alberton) - R10k for 10mb but 1:1 business line

The newest and fastest fiber is running along hiedelburg for Macro and the New Market Park Mall. Thats the latest Fiber node installed in the area and has capacity up to gigbit speeds (just not available yet).

Just a fyi

For what it's worth:

East Rand Telkom Customers Please Note! Your ADSL and voice services will be affected by a planned outage from 18:00 on 15/11/2106 to 23:30 on 16/11/2016. Telkom is Migrating your DSL and Voice Services to the latest Multi Service Access Nodes. Your link will be down during that time and you will have no voice or Internet connectivity. Areas affected: ALBERTON, ALRODE, BEDFORDVIEW, EASTLEIGH, EDENVALE, GLEN VISTA, MEYERSDAL.

That's interesting they did this two months ago and all they did was a software upgrade on the IMAX and DSLAM's - one would of hoped it was something more significant.

Actual notice doesn't say much:

Next Generation Network Evolution (MSAN)

Only question is, what do they do?

a) Hardware upgrade of network cards?
b) Cable rewiring to different equipment?
c) Software upgrades?
d) Backhaul upgrade from ATM link to Metro?

I noticed it also affects mini DSLAMs, which are not part of MSAN.

They mentioned multiple MSANs in a single "small" area. Is it multiple cabinets in one building or they are spread across neighbourhood?

Fiber - will it ever reach Alberton

So here is the thing, my Intel (which are senior planners) specifically say they have no intent on doing any "major" upgrades on the alberton exchange.

Now we know fiber is already here and almost everywhere in Alberton its just its being reserved for commercial or owned by Dark Fiber.

I recon its normal maintainance - software upgrades, where there are burnt out ports or mini SLAMS due to power/lightning that type of stuff.

At the current rate I am on the verge of just paying R5k for the business fiber from Dark fiber its only 10mbps but its 1:1 contention.

The various providers keep saying they coming but but so is the download I started last year at the normal telkom line speeds.

I went the LTE route and it was epic (102mbps) - for two months - then the free me k@k came along and the towers got fried and again they have no plans on fixing that.

So, no effects will take place then?

What's point in this?
