Pre and probiotics are complete nonsense.

Probiotics have some fairly solid evidence behind them...

https://www.mja.com.au/journal/2008/188/5/probiotics-sorting-evidence-myths

Abstract

•Probiotics consist of yeast or bacteria, especially lactic acid bacteria. They are available as capsules, powder, fermented milks or yoghurts.

•Probiotics exhibit strain-specific differences in their resistance to acid and bile, ability to colonise the gastrointestinal tract, clinical efficacy, and benefits to the health of the host.

•There is level I evidence for the use of probiotics in treating acute infectious diarrhoea and preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Saccharomyces boulardii having the most evidence to support their use for these conditions.

•There is level II evidence that S. boulardii combined with high-dose vancomycin is more effective than the antibiotic alone in preventing recurrent Clostridium difficile diarrhoea.

•There is level I evidence that probiotics prevent traveller’s diarrhoea.

•There is level I evidence for use of the high-potency probiotic VSL#3 in preventing pouchitis, and level II evidence for this agent in preventing relapse in patients with ulcerative colitis.

•Probiotics are generally regarded as safe and well tolerated. Some probiotics may be contraindicated in patients who are immunocompromised or have severe underlying illness, as they have been reported to cause fungaemia and bacteraemia.

Although there are other viewpoints...

:wtf: umm no they not. When you take an antibiotic it kills all the flora in your intestine and gut (not just the bad bugs that are giving you the squirts). In order to kick start the process again for your gut to function correctly you need to take a probiotic after an antibiotic dosage.

That's what I thought! I would also add...any other time you nuke all the good bacteria in your gut.

By that I meant pre and probiotic pills and foods commercially sold are almost always nonsense....

Here's an article outlining the main problems:

https://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/probiotics/

The science behind them is mostly anecdotal and sometimes downright sketchy. There are definitely bacteria in the gut that aid in a lot of things, do we have the remotest idea how it all works, not really yet...

It is much simpler and cheaper just to eat properly instead of resorting to expensive pills, none of which are truly necessary.

A nice chart showing the effectiveness of various supplements and vitamins..

Nice chart indeed.

What I don't understand about this study is that they claim that alcohol consumption (even in moderate drinkers) can cause cancer however they then turn around and say

Individual decisions to reduce alcohol consumption will reduce risk in those people, but reduction in alcohol consumption across the population will bring down the incidence of these cancers much more substantially, and provide many other health benefits as well.

if alcohol based cancer risk is also prevalent in moderate drinkers then how will reducing alcohol consumption reduce the risk?

It would be interesting to actually see the white paper on this.

This I do agree with (with regards to most foods and yoghurts) claiming they contain probiotics is a bit of a hype since most of the probiotic bacteria used is the same bacteria that they use to culture the product with. Example is yoghurts, most yoghurts will use Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus acidophilus and streptococcus thermophilus as a normal culture anyway "so now they throw in alittle bit of fibre into the yoghurt and claim it as probiotic yoghurt.

Nice chart indeed.

I've had problems with my gut fauna since I drank from a dodgy stream many years ago - I was dehydrated and it was the only water going. Some foods, especially dairy, can be murder on my guts if my gut fauna is out of whack, but I find eating yogurt fairly regularly makes a huge difference. I can even get away with milk in my coffee when I've been particularly zealous about getting a daily dose of yogurt. I don't see the need for all these other supplements, yogurts the only thing that works for me.

This is a nice chart I am going to bookmark that, thank you.

For me it reinforces how important eating a balanced and varied diet is, I love fruit and veggies so its easy for me.

I only take vitamins that are recommended by my doctor where a clinical need has been identified through blood tests and am happy to see that they are all on the effective and promising list here.

With regards to probiotics (which would fall under supplement not vitamin) I have found like Indigogirl they work for me. I tend to get sick again shortly if I don't take them with anti-biotics and in one case got a yeast infection  so I tend to rely on my own experience and doctors recommendation.

So it would be interesting to see a correlation between cancer stats among muslim and jewish populations compared to alcohol consuming populations. I doubt it will confirm it.

This can be a serious business.

My doc insists that I eat one fresh fruit a day. He says the single most important diet planning thing in his life is making sure he has a fruit for the day. All to do with gut flora.
