Thinking of buying a 2001 -2003 model of an alfa 147 2.0L T.Spark or the 1.6 T.Spark

Is there anything i should know about second hand alfa's or is there anything special.

are they expensive to maintain ?

thanks :)

My dad had the 147 2.0 Selepeed, it was a very nice car to drive when it was actually on the road and not getting repaired and it wasn't just the Selespeed that gave trouble. I would not buy it, you are going to be without your car allot of the time. I remember the one time my dads car was in for repairs for a week or two, out for a month then back in for three or four weeks.

Alfa don't have a fantastic reputation :/

especially that specific car, i would suggest you call in during the open line segment of the cape-talk/702 program 'A Word On Cars' with Sagie Moodley and Adam Ford for a erm .. 'honest' opinion :-) but they seem to know what they are talking about.

So they not the most reliable.. well i remember jeremy clarkson saying... An alfa is one of the most fantastic cars to drive... when its not in the repair shop..

Guys, Alfa's had a reputation of being unreliable in the 70's and 80's. The newer cars are just as reliable as anything else. Driving an Alfa is an experience. I own three Alfa's at the moment. The 156, the Spider 2.0 T.Spark and a 1984 GTV.

The 2.0 Engine (156 & Spider) is rock solid. It's awesome to drive. I would say go for an Alfa. You will never regret it. They also don't go out of fashion like a BMW for instance. (as soon as a new model comes out the previous one seems immediately and completely outdated) I agree with what was mentioned though... Cam belt service can be pricey (depends where you go) and stay away from selespeed definitely. Italians can not make automatics... It's not in their blood! :D

well i have only ever sat in the back of a 147 and i was very impressed...

They seem like they still real cars :) and i agree with the looks.. a 5 year old BM or merc or Volvo looks outdated.. a 5 year old alfa still looks very sleek..

Im just mainly worried about breaking down all the time :)

STAY FAR AWAY FROM THAT MODEL 147!

It is just a bunch of trouble. Especially the 2.0L, the electronics on a friends car gave in a few times, driving at night with an un-illuminated speedo is not fun. And that fancy BOSE sound system is not what its cracked up to be. The services cost an arm and a leg, and prey they don't find a part that needs to replaced, then you will part with more of youre hard earned money.

And besides all the above, when you get into an accident, you will wait a LONG time for parts. But the same could be said for Peugot and Renualt.

That my good deed for the day.:)

You don't buy an Alfa out of any sensible reasons, it has to be a purchase out of passion. The 147 is a great little car to drive IF you don't mind the occasional hiccup and it's many electrical quirks. My dad bought a 3 door 147 2.0 T-Spark about a year and a half ago, which he loved every second of it until it developed a problem (water in the engine - cockup somewhere at the service department) and a bunfight between my dad, the agents and the ombudsman saw it out of action for 6 months. In that time he bought an old 5 series which he really likes and my mom is now the happy owner of the car, other than a really funny quirk (the boot sometimes opens when you unlock the car) she loves the car and would be hard to part with it.

Yep, I agree - DO NOT BUY ONE!

Friends had loads of problems - The 147 is a POS and known to be a lemon!

That more 'no's than 'yes's ;)

You're still taking a risk ?
