How much Eskom wants to charge for using 0kWh — up to R3,474 for home users

Eskom's proposed electricity tariff restructuring will see many residential electricity users paying between three and six times more for a grid connection if they don't use electricity during the month.

The power utility submitted the tariff plan to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) in August 2022 and gave three primary reasons for the revision.

At those sorts of prices, it becomes an almost entirely no-brainer to go completely off the grid I would think...

If you use 0Kwh, what are Eskom going to do when you don't pay them this "connection" fee? Disconnect you? (Yes I'm ignoring all the other avenues that they can take that would possibly impact your credit rating etc)

That is what I would do if I was in a position to install solar. Go completely off-grid, and then use a generator for backup in the event of my own personal "load shedding".

The only way I can see them screwing you is if they don't disconnect you and keep billing you for the "connection fee". Then one day when Gweezy is retired from government and sailing off the coast of Turkey, Eskom start paying people to feed back into the grid, they might expect you to pay the arrears before reconnecting you or paying you out for feeding back to the grid.

So yeah, the crux of the issue is going to be existing connections in reality and whether you can "disconnect" it.

This will eventually go the same way as e-tolls, and probably take just as long (unless the ANC is booted in 2024 ) and essentially "criminalize" ordinary folks in the process.

It is stupid and probably unconstitutional.

This article isn’t telling the whole truth @Hanno Labuschagne and it is definitely not balanced.

The increase it for the HOMEPOWER tariff. Nobody is on the Homepower tariff and it won’t affect anyone with or without solar.

It’s not fair to generate outrage while at the same time not putting in a giant disclaimer that this will practically affect not a single home in SA.

Unless that is you already pay an R8.25/kVA/day capacity charge and are connected via 3 phase at 100kW. Or if you’re one of the below institutions.

Nothing will change for your home/flat/town house etc.

The name ‘Home Power’ is badly chosen by Eskom but it has nothing to do with your home. Don’t believe me. Check your invoice and see what tariff you’re on. I guarantee you it’s not Homepower.

M3h, doesn't affect me. I get my power from City Power. Not Eskom Direct.

It's very typical of @Jan and MyBB staff. Create articles that have little facts and don't tell the whole story. Just for the clicks.

Great now roll this out to informal settlements, lets look how much of Eskom will remain

So how many of you are on Eskoms grid and not your municipalities?

My municipality charges me R692 for 'infrastructure' every month whether I use a unit of my prepaid meter or not.

I would think most people are on HomeLight or something like that.

So for the moment it probably means nothing, but don't be surprised if Eskom start migrating people to this HomePower tariff.
