Durban - An investigation has been launched into how a man, arrested for theft on Monday, was able to get a firearm into the holding cells at the Westville SAPS police station. The man was put into the holding cells after his arrest.

According to Captain Nqobile Gwala, police spokesperson, police received an anonymous tip after the man’s arrest that he had a firearm in the holding cells.

“Police called for backup and asked the man to declare if he had a firearm with him. He drew the firearm and pointed it at his head. Police managed to negotiate with the suspect and he was disarmed,” Gwala said.

The 38-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly ate food from a shop and did not pay.

Gwala said a case of theft had been opened at Westville police station. The man is due to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

I know a guy who was arrested for "drunk driving" while being stone cold sober a few years ago. He was locked up in a holding cell on a Friday evening, and spent his time in there until Monday morning. He had on him his EDC pistol, with spare magazines, two pockets knives and his cell phone. When he left (charges dropped), he asked the cop why they never searched him and the cop just went "dunno".
