Hi All.

Im new to South Africa, well been here a year but only got my internet a couple of months back.

New Villa and I went with WebAfrica for a 4mb uncapped package. R350 something for the broadband itself R400 a month for a line.

And then I had to give R700 deposit to Telkom to install the line.

However I was under the impression that by paying Webafrica the R350 and the R400 for the line I wouldnt need to pay Telkom.

However 3 months after having the service I get a call from Telkom saying I havnt paid for my line.

I told them that the service is all with WebAfrica and to speak to them about it.

Am I in the wrong, should I be paying WebAfrica and Telkom for a line,

Im really confused.

On another note Telkom installed the line, but still have my address as somewhere completly different and have the wrong address for me. IM refusing to give them my proper address as how can they be so stupid to think that I live somewhere else when they installed my line at my house.

Thoughts on the matter.

Thanks

There are 3 things you pay for when you get ADSL in SA.

1. Analog voice line from Telkom, this is always from Telkom, is about ~R150/month.

2. DSL line portion. This can be either from Telkom or Web Africa, you pay R400 for this?

3. ISP data portion. This can be either from Telkom or Web Africa, you pay R350 for this?

So yes even if you have #2 and #3 with Web Africa, you still need to pay #1 to Telkom.

This. IIRC Telkom analog line rental is now R167 pm

Heh ok cool, thx for at least pointing out the correct value. Taking that into account, the op probably owe R501 to Telkom now for those 3 months rental.

The "R700 deposit to Telkom" is probably the Telkom 'Installation Cost'. R618.60 plus VAT.

If you dont have a credit history with Telkom sometimes they ask for a R700 deposit as well.

Happened to a colleague at work just today actually. They wanted a R700 deposit.

It sounds like the place he moved into is new, if there was no line previously installed, self install would not have sufficed.

The cost to have a residential line installed can be circumvented by taking the Closer 1 package. They don't charge you for the installation. Then when you move you can cancel the line without any issues.

As mentioned above, Telkom can charge you R700 as a deposit which has nothing to do with the installation.
When you apply for a line they inform you that you may have to pay a deposit depending on your Telkom credit rating.

Actually that is not entirely true.

I had Telkom install a brand new line at my place, and I had to pay R0 deposit. I skipped all the installation charges by going for a closer 3 package, and converting it to a normal one after a month.

They have the option to charge as I said above.
It doesn't apply to everyone.
I also did just as you said and did not pay for installation but as stated by the Telkom staff, it is a deposit.
