Now their Contact Us page on Internet banking 404's.

Also, inter-account transfers to credit cards now take a day to reflect when they used to be instant.

Aaarrggghhh. Everything about Standard Bank is just so broken these days.

Every time I deal with them these days it makes me want to post in the high blood pressure thread.

Are they getting paranoid too?

Went into SB yesterday, as needed brand-new R200 notes to present as prizes. Offered the teller some grubby notes in exchange. First thing teller says she does not have new notes and she won't enquire with another teller. As I turn away, security guard grabs my arm and asks me to come into this office. Fellow comes in and asks why I "demanding" new notes? I tell him, and he asks the question again. So I show him the smelly banknotes I have been given. He states that these are still legal tender and I am wasting the bank's time as they are not bound to supply new notes. So I ask him where I can get them from and he stands up and opens the door for me to leave

That and they have had two major systems outages in the last month. It is a bit embarrassing to get to a shop with a trolley full of goods, try to pay with your cheque card and be told that Standard Bank is down and you can't pay. In both cases I confirmed that it affected different vendors in different locations (Cape Town Southern Suburbs and Fishhoek.) so it was definitely Standard Bank.

They're an absolute farce these days.

Yeah they annoyed me too. Good riddance.

In fairness, retail branches have no feasible mechanism to get you brand new notes. Its like asking for a new car in a 2nd hand car yard. Coincidences aside, the only way I know to get new money from the major banks is if you place a big order for change (i.e. R200k of coins & notes)...then you tend to get new stuff.

Dude do you know what money laundering is? There is no way any bank will just exchange old notes for new ones. Pay the money into your account and go withdraw it asking for R200 notes.

This is not paranoia it is plain common sense.

1. Name & shame the branch.
2. Post on their FB page
3. Write to the MD.

hehe...no money laundering has very little to do with exchanging an old note for a new one.

Of course you get a lot of different forms of money laundering, ranging from making it untraceable to changing it into physical assets, but at its most basic level, I give you money I got illegitimately of which the serial numbers may be traceable and you give me random money in return.

The least they could have done was to explain that it is against policy (if it is) to not exchange notes.
Bullying tactics like they used will see me run to another bank to change banks.

If I was treated like that I would have closed my account right there and then.

Standard Bank, what a joke. If it were not for my home loan I would leave too.

The horror stories about our banks these days are crazy. Thankfully I've had no issues with FNB so far but my experience is anecdotal, and I'm sure others have some crazy horror stories to tell about them as well.
