Amazon – which hasn't confirmed SA launch – seeks help landing South African sellers

On Tuesday afternoon, Amazon started to advertise two new jobs: a new accounts manager, and a key new accounts manager, both based in Cape Town.

Both managers will "recruit and launch online sellers on Amazon's Marketplace and help them expand and grow their businesses by partnering with Amazon", the company said.

Some South African companies sell their goods on the Amazon marketplaces in countries such as the USA and UK, but this is not that. The managers are being hired "to improve the experience for our African customers", said Amazon.

The company has no marketplaces in Africa, yet. But leaked documents first reported by Insider in June showed plans for Amazon online malls to open in Nigeria and South Africa in 2023, an initiative with the codename Project Fela.

Amazon has never confirmed such plans, and has not responded to questions on its ambitions.

After not doing proper research before attempting to start up in South Africa, Amazon will now likely find out that there are not much manufacturing or many sellers here in this country, unless, of course if they target places like Checkers, Pick & Pay and Spar to sell on their platform.

They should rather find a way to get products from abroad to SA, but there is no guarantee that Amazon will be a success as the economy is tough and money scarce.

Amazon's play should be to undercut the prices of takealot and take losses for a few years and then buy takealot or force them out of the game. I can't imagine that takealot's profit margins are too big. At the end they will both have to drop their prices to stay competitive until one pulls out or goes bankrupt. So in my mind its a battle of whos pockets are the deepest, or I am just dead wrong.

And yet if you go onto takealot site, you find many resellers.

You’ll also find plenty of manufacturers.

Anyone who uses your services as a market researcher would never start a business. I don't even know why you're still in South Africa when the entire Europe, Russia, North America etc are open to people like you. Why do you torture yourself waking up to people you hate so much? Leave.

If you do proper research, you'll find that the OP is a certifiable loon.

Amazon will win me over by delivering when i order instead of constantly sending "Takealot attempted to deliver your order but you were not available" when someone is available 24x7 and the CCTV shows no one even pitching up. And then 2 days later come to the right address anyway.

True, on their American store, they have a few items at a great price I'd like to buy. But it's not manufactured here, so getting it past the ANC import greed tax, will probably make it much more expensive.
They have office shoe brand called Clark, with shoes looking like Hush puppies, at a 3rd of the price of Hush puppies and better quality. But importing it cost 2 times more than the shoe. Would love if they can have stuff like this local store, at the same price as over there.
