And you ignore the definition of satire...

If a fact is mentioned in a "funny way", does it make it less of a fact?

ok so you admit, we should start reading satire websites as factual news too then.

" sinister onset of propaganda".....

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
You can't have your cake and eat it. If these comedians are supposed to be taken seriously because of their newsworthy views, then one has to ask what political agenda they are pushing. Personally, I thought comedy was supposed to be original and inventive rather than a groupthink tower of babel.

While I usually agree with Emjay, on this I find I agree with GBM a bit more. I seem to recall seeing the figure of the incentives given/asked for Amazon to be $3 billion (I'll try find the source). As much as I'm for free enterprise, I think these giant monopolies do need to be reigned in a bit.

Its also a sad state that does not bode well for the future when people are turning to late night comedy shows as bastions of truth, wisdom and knowledge. It might all be well researched but it is entertainment first and foremost. If they had to make a sacrifice between entertainment or news, the news would be the first to go. (News being that truth, wisdom, knowledge)

Whats even sader is the teenage 13 year old schoolboy tantrums "Just because it's satire or funny, doesn't mean its not real", like that actually makes it suddenly valid and credible.

When the New York headquarters was first announced, the state said it offered Amazon about $1.525 billion in “performance-based direct incentives” in order to bring the proposed 25,000 jobs over the next several years, though the total incentive package eventually grew to around $3 billion.

Without qualifying the point being made here, as I have not watched the episode above, it is an injustice to label John Oliver's show as a mere 'comedy show'. It has a lot of substance, exposes crazy s**t in America with almost every episode and has made a difference to countless lives thanks to his influence.

How many jobs have it created? Amazon employs more than half a million people.

I'm trying he goes off the rails and sets up his strawman 40 seconds in then at 10 min were I've quite he went of on multiple irrelevant rants and couldn't even convincingly argue against his out false strawman.
But hey if the childish humour does it for you then fine. I'll admit, I smiled a few times.
There's absolutely no substance to that video.

What exactly is Oliver’s key appeal?

“His Britishness, since it allows him to adopt the role of the assumed-to-be-friendly foreigner trying to understand just what’s going on,” Jonathan Gray, professor of media and cultural studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, told Observer.

“The saltiest language and the most all-out searing attacks on Trump, all delivered with that intelligent British accent,” Paul Levinson, professor of communications and media studies at Fordham University, chimed in.

“Sam Bee is all about feminist rage, while John Oliver’s pieces stand out as legitimate news,” Gray said.

“News with a comical bent turns out to be a pretty accurate reporting, albeit with a progressive perspective,” Levinson added.

That progressive perspective has led some analysts to worry about young people getting all of their news from satirical sources.

But that worry is largely unfounded: the same Pew study that measured Stewart’s influence found that millennials read sites like the Huffington Post or newspapers like USA Today as often as they watched The Daily Show.

“It’s clumsy to make it sound like people are getting news from satire instead of something else when actually people consume news from a wide variety of areas,” Gray said.

But while Oliver and Stewart may bristle at the journalist label, their shows are inherently journalistic in nature.

It doesn’t matter what they call themselves, it matters what they do,” Levinson said. “If someone does journalism, it doesn’t matter if they say they’re a comic. If they’re talking news, they’re doing a kind of journalism.”

“What a journalist is is up for discussion,” Gray added.

But whatever you label Oliver, his segments have real world effects.

Regardless of me postyingthese excerpts, I'm sure the TL;DR comments will be prevelant etc.

Moving on.....

When something like an Amazon office arrives it really changes things. It seldom gets better for the locals, If you are not a part of their specific technocracy this could impact you negatively.

And yes they are bringing hundreds of jobs to Cape Town in the very near future...more so than the government has managed.

Exactly why we should privatize it all.

That being said I get where you are coming from regarding the Amazon Koolaid perspective all their employees seem to have.

Last Week Tonight is not a comedy show, Its a well researched show which uses comedy and for that fact they have to be far more accurate than Fox News or CNN.

So none of the cited reports have any substance? so none of the facts have any substance?

Costumer: “I’d like to order 25 pizzas. I have a 10-dollar-off coupon I’d like to use, too.”

AOC: “No, you must pay full menu price! I will not accept your evil coupon.”

Costumer: “I’ll just take my business elsewhere.”

AOC: “Hey boss I just saved us $10 can I have a raise?”
