Big news about Amazon's South African marketplace

A reference to Amazon's South African marketplace has been found in an Amazon support drop-down menu, according to a LinkedIn post from Prebo Digital CEO Timo Dinkelman.

Dinkelman shared a screenshot showing "Amazon.co.za" and "Amazon.com.ng" options in the drop-down.

Takealot will have to step up to not be eaten up. I don’t think the competition commission would allow for Amazon to buy Takealot even if they wanted to on the grounds of needing competition in the market

My Amazon Side Hustle game is going to be stepped up if they launch. Just saying.

I wonder if they look back at how they treated suppliers and think ‘uh oh’.

They have a very ‘We are Takealot and you’ll listen’ mentality

Amazon will not work in Africa. Besides Africa has a longer river.

So glad this is happening, we will see by how much we have been fleeced with over the years

Why? Took Amazon 6 months to deliver me something. In the end I had to cancel the order and reorder. Not to mention all the Takealot pickup points all over. Takealot is pretty well set up.

I have had orders delivered by DHL, FedEx and aramex when ordering from Amazon. Best service is when it's FedEx.
My experience is that it will always be UPS or FedEx if you use priority. In my case 9 out of 10 times it's fedex. If you use standard shipping it's Aramex.

Why woudl I buy from Amazon.co.za when I know pricng will be cheaper from the US?

The question there is always, was it fulfilled by Amazon or by merchant?

You'll need to check what the pricing is then, I'd bet that a lot of popular items would be cheaper after shipping/taxes via Amazon.co.za, same as I order near everything from .de in Europe and only check if .com has a deal to make it worth it.

Amazon itself.

Guess time will tell. But typically high value items I have found are cheaper on Amazon.com/.UK

No man. Remember, Takealot is flattered:
“It demonstrates that we have built something that has built an investment case good enough for global companies like Amazon to want to come here.”
