Amazon is looking for South Africans to work from home

Amazon is advertising new work-from-home positions in South Africa, which is suitable for people with a matric and a fibre connection.

Amazon is the world’s largest ecommerce player and one of the most valuable companies in the world, with a market cap of $1.84 trillion.

Of course they are... Friend of mine earns R45/hr doing customer support for AMZ UK customers. Min wage over there would be around R180/hour, so it pays to get qualified, hard working South Africans for next to nothing. Not sure why MyBB keep trying to encourage this.

Wait just a minute, did you Okes read the fine print of office hours?

An example of a typical shift is Tuesday to Saturday, 8pm to 5am.

Zero chance this will work for me, I need my weekends free and I start day drinking at 5pm so this wont work either.

Because we have a 30% unemployment rate and something is better than nothing?

Does not really change, when I used to work night shifts we would start drinking at 4am or 5am depending and then head home sometime when the sun was up.

I am an adult now, I turn 50 this year
I can't stay up late and be asked to work and also be sober for that

Why you laughing?
When I worked at IBM in the 90s we were very sought after
We arrived at work on time
Stayed sober
And worked until 5pm

Unlike the lazy pommy peoples. And recruitment agencies there knew this and that is why we were always headhunted for jobs

Is that a "Back in my day" story you are spinning?

How much can you expect to get paid?
From R45/hour. My friend, (late 30's), had 10 years customer service experience at BCX (retrenched a few years ago), has good Matric and completed MCSE (apparently not worth what it used to be), is hard working, and doing 4x 11 hour shifts a week. They provide him with a Linux based custom laptop that monitors his productivity and away from keyboard time. He's been there nearly two years there now, no salary increase, shifts change regularly. Oh - but he can get a 20% staff discount which is negated by shipping fees. Not that he has much left over after paying rent and fibre connection...

And without the job he wouldn't have fibre or a place to stay.
Don't like it? Don't work for them, but don't be a close minded arsehole and try deny others a job who desperately need it.

Why? Are South Africans now lazy? If they are then I will in future start with 'Back in my day when I worked for IBM'
That is entirely a matter of perspective. Depends on who you ask. Ask the right guy the right question and they will give you the answer you want.

I don't see anyone denying anyone anything. That said, I agree with the sentiment - don't work for anyone if you're not happy with the pay or conditions.

But you can vloek hulle uit with your drunk self at 3am in the morning. It's a win-win!

Looks closer to R60/h today (glassdoor - range is pretty tight for sample count, so I believe it). I believe that’s nearly 3x minimum wage.

The big question at this level of wage is benefits. It seems as though medical is paid from the online reviews. At home work for matric level qualifications is also a pretty big plus in this environment.

Doesn’t sound great TBH, but probably fits a niche. I don’t see why the British minimum wage is relevant.

Have you seen the unemployment stats in this country?
