For those prices I might hop on the Amazon bandwagon... even though the Google Home is also appealing.

Meh just Amazon flogging their cheap tablets. Google Home also made loads of progress in one year.

Did you even look at the list? Or are you just so in love with Google that you are blinded to the fact that they actually don't have the best product on the market in this segment.

How well does this work in SA and what sort of tasks do you guys use echo dot for? Keen to look into this?

Can't comment on what services are available for SA but I use it for the following (Can't see an of this not working in SA)
- Setting timers/reminders
- Weather, news and other general internet queries.
- Controlling kodi, lights (sonoff)
- Reading temperates in rooms (via openhap)

Next on my list is adding music, controlling tv via harmony bridge, interface to pi alarm

Bf uses the echo dot for music and some updates. He had to jump through some hoops
