Amazon South Africa versus Takealot tech price comparison - May 2024 (Amazon launch day)

Competition is good but I will still buy from TAL if the prices are similar. TAL has been good to me WRT support and returns.
We'll have to see if Amazon can top it!

TAL is usually more expensive than anywhere else, but feels to me because you're buying a "gaurantee" that you can easily return it without any struggles.

Of course - there's no loyalty in ecommerce only price, convenience (speed/reliability of delivery; returns) and customer service.

All things being equal so far, Amazon appears to have the edge on customer service with their advertised 24/7 support and purported one-day delivery promise - we'll see, but these are factors that will edge price out especially if price differences are negligible.

If they're going to source all of their stock from South African suppliers, they're doomed before they've even started.

They need to offer stuff that Takealot and the rest of the competition can't.

All of the stuff I'm interested in shows "Currently Unavailable" on the local site.

Maybe that means they intend to stock it here at some point, but I'm doubtful.

Something I don't like on Amazon right now is the incorrect specs on some of the listings, they need to sort that out.
The Hisense 55A6K is not a 120hz panel yet Amazon has it as the following at the top of the listing.

Yet in their own Product description it says

Takealot Listing description is much better

Same suppliers, different skin.

People keep on confusing Amazon with Amazon Marketplace.

Even most of the books that I checked on TAL that are out of stock are also out of stock on AZA. But in stock on Amazon US.

Honestly, I think give it 6 months to determine whether things are trending in the right direction.

This is more of a "soft launch" with a very limited stock catalog.

But then:

Takealot: ~R 76 each1715111475779.png

They (Amazon) really do have a weird collection of items present at the moment. Bought the 1632 cells using the free delivery voucher ("WELCOME") to give them a go.

+1
I am more interested in some of the unusual things that they have on their US website that I can't get in South Africa without importing. That's what they need to grow. The lower prices will come with competition, right now I just want a mechanical ergonomic keyboard, please.

The Amazon model is to make the supplier do all the work and pay for the priviledge. Cory Doctorow writes about it all the time.

Basically, in the long run, South African suppliers are screwed (assuming the USA model is applied here, of course).

It was the exact same for the Australian market at launch with Amazon..
