AMD’s new 32-core Ryzen Threadripper CPU – South African pricing

Looking forward to benchmarks. Last Threadripper series was a bit disappointing compared to the 8th gen Intel chips.

Huh? It was quite a bit better for price/performance. What more do you want?

How does one deal with 250W TDP?

What's the max a consumer grade CPU gets to these days?

Yeah. I'll pay 30K for it. I need something decent to play my collection of solitaire games on Win 10.

With that sort of power cooling the VRMs is also going to be important.

Which 8th gen chips specifically? It basically stomped on any Intel chips in the same price bracket on most things you'd want a high core count chips for.

I settled on the 6 core 8700k as it was generally faster than the 8 core 2700x.

Also they were the same price, so bang for the buck, the 8700k is actually the better option.

Oh we're talking about Threadripper here.

EDIT: Its Intel counterparts would be the Skylake X series chips.

One nice feature that AMD brought out with the AM4 chips is guaranteed support up until within 2020, which means I can sell my 6-core Ryzen 5 1600 in two years from now and hopefully pick up a sweet 8-core Zen 3 7nm 3xxx CPU when they release :D

I personally got a bit tired with Intel needing a new socket layout every generation, forcing users to upgrade their motherboard even though it didn't directly affect me as I was still on Ivy Bridge before I jumped ship. AMD also seem to be less affected by the spate of CPU vulnerabilities popping out every few months.

I am hoping AMD's IPC performance catches up to Intel with Zen 3. Competition is really good in this industry and Intel has lead the pack for too long - their innovation has stagnated with them only bringing minor improvements from one gen to the next. Another benefit is this pushing Intel to release desktop i5's that were not only quad core variants, something they have been doing since the Nehalem-based First Generation i5's. One could argue the fact that most applications and games were not optimised for more than four cores, but the extra cores do make a noticeable difference when doing multitasking as opposed to one sole task ie streaming a game vs just gaming.

Where is Zyraz with his Ryzen beast?
