AMD launches processors it says beat the Apple M2 and Intel Core i7

AMD has introduced a new line of Ryzen processors — its 7040U chipsets — which it claims provide speedier graphics for thin-and-light laptops than its rivals, Engadget reports.

Each chipset in the range packs an RDNA 3-based Radeon 700M GPU, which AMD says touts the enhancements seen on its desktop video cards.

Hmmm this look very much of nice it does.

I've been eyeing an AMD laptop for a little while, think it can remain a glimmer in my eye till there are some decent options with the new procs.

Lol with the Apple M3 is just a month away. AMD playing catchup.

Maybe not:

unlike Apple, AMD tends to send its best and newest silicon to the datacentre. they can be a year late to market and still beat Intel in the mobile space at the moment.

I am running a Zenbook 14 with a 5825U 8 core with RDNA2 and a 75wh battery. Picked it up for R20k last year with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage.

With Windows 11, I get about 10-12 hours battery life at 80% brightness on the OLED screen. In Linux Mint, I have managed to push it to 16-18 hours at the same settings.

Windows is the biggest thing holding back x86 battery life. Apple's software is its biggest advantage over windows. Intel mobile CPU's are just an additional handicap that makes Apple silicon look especially good.

Imagine a world where Windows has the following:
1. A modern replacement for the ancient NT kernel (the Linux kernel)
2. no bloatware whatsoever (all apps are optional installs)
3. optional telemetry (default off)
4. the Linux networking stack and storage subsystem
5. Windows updates that are lightweight and efficiently installed.
6. No on-line account requirement
7. A search function that is local only and works
8. Security architecture that is secure by default, rather than having to add windows defender and SmartScreen tech
9. a single settings control panel that is finished (rather than 2+ legacy panels and 3+ unfinished new ones)
10. a single licence type (no artificial gating of essential features like bitlocker)

This may be true but will the battery life match that of the Apple M chips?

They did, they just decided to move it again and moan

They are a bit desperate now,

I really hope that they don't call it Core Ultra... that must better be a placeholder. In the case it isn't ultra, then it is certainly not super, and well, they can't use Hyper because Hyper-V. They should have started the phasing out with Meteor Lake and not with the current generation. Unless, Meteor Lake does indeed do something ultra which I doubt since there isn’t anything new with the current architecture.

here is my fix for Intel's CPU naming issue (incomplete) - AMD please take notes.

Intel i7 gen 1 8p16eU

i7 denotes the product class (stick with what people know)
gen 1 denotes the generation

The above can be understood by non-technical people and will help them select the right product

8p denotes the number of performance cores
16e denotes the number of efficiency cores
U denotes the TDP (stick with current scheme)

you can add additional numbers and lower case letters to denote additional functions, like 6a could be 6 AI cores, or 24g would denote graphics modules etc.

I’ve never heard of that leaker I’ll take it with a bag of salt.
