AMD Closing down ?

Ok, so they not closing down ... but are the chances much better now with the core 2 duo ?

And now intel announces the quad core by the end of the ear, in response to which AMD says they will move up the release of theirs from end 2008 to mid 2008. Um ... yeah well.

And to add insult to injury there are already whispers of the 8 core on the net.

So now is Intel trying to squash the competition completely?

If so this will be a VERY bad thing as Intel can go into Microsoft (ie: Vista release) mode and release the new chip "when we are ready".

Personally, with the exception of the 2400+ and the Barton 3000+, I've always been an intel fan, but I really hope that AMD pull through, otherwise we are in trouble.

Um Intel are always saying things - quad core from Intel will most likely only happen a year after AMD release octocore :D

i highly doubt that. I'm pretty sure intel are gonna be ahead of AMD for a while now, especially because of Conroe.

The new conroe CPU's are actually cheeper than their AMD counterparts (where AMD has a counterpart  )

Have a look at price comparisons and benchmarks here:

Remember, there are quite a few pages to this review, so click the next arrow at the bottom of each article, it is not only one page ;)

thats cuz intel have stopped shipping them 'intel inside' stickers with their cpu's :D

Seriously though - Lets see how it goes if Intel become the new king ding a lings then i shall invest in one when it is time i need more speed.

getting a dual core AMD for a work machine next week though I opted to give up my feeble Intel p4 3.2Ghz machine which i think many will admit was a rather crap CPU from Intel.

Remember, clock speed is not everything, I have sold countless 1.8ghz AMD CPU's to clients, and they are amazed at how fast the PC runs, really, clock speed doesn't really mean much.

For example, take a look at the conroe CPU's, I haven't yet seen one that goes above the 3GHz mark

AMD survived much harder times than this, they actually have made some profit the last few years...

yeah - I am mighty impressed with my AMD64 2800+ I had a AMD 1800+ before. Also when i compare my AMD64 to the Intel I run at work... hrm i have issues with Intel cuz although in app speed is there it seems to have these strange little pauses at the weirdest times.

Dunno but perceptual speed AMD wins hands down and I am only speaking of my two machines work vs home. They both have the same amount of RAM and same GFX card.

Although the work machine has better Hard drives.

Who knows - I will only trully be happy when the latest CPU can make me coffee on order :D

AMD are doing just fine, they can even afford to buy ATI for $5.5 billion

Lol, agree with the coffee :D

Also another thing to notice is this, since all game rendering and such has moved over to the GPU, the CPU doesn't impact FPS much anymore, if it does it will be by a very small amount in the range of 1fps. So if you into gaming, then you can choose any CPU that suites your pocket, and then really splash out on the Graphics card.

But, if you are going to use the PC for audio encoding and such, then an Intel CPU is for you, AMD just doesn't cut it when it comes to this sort of thing, and now that Intel is releasing the Conroe CPU's you can bet your bottom dollar (or Rand) that these CPU's will be used in most "number crunching" environments.

If you are simply going to use your PC for office use, any CPU will do, really, even an AMD CPU will suffice in this area ;)

Basically, if you are in it for gaming, don't worry about a R4000 CPU, get a simple AMD CPU, dual core if you want, and then rather spend the R4000 on a decent graphics card. The Conroe CPU is not for gamers, unless you have too much money to spend, and don't know what to spend it on, then you can purchase yourself a conroe (after you sent me a donation ;) ). CPU's have basically fallen out of the equation in the gaming market.

Yeah well they couldn't have bought nvidia.
But maybe PowerVR or XGI would have been a better or at least much cheaper purchase than ATI.
