Do they though? Do piledriver modules really count as 2 cores each? Did the PS3's 8 SPEs count as cores?
Let's rather try and forget about that part of AMD history

They're significantly weaker cores though and I do suspect we'll start see PC ports start getting more CPU bound as the generation progresses.
So does that mean for an upgrade I should target an 8 core cpu?

They the 'fastest' for a little while before Intel is the fastest.
AMD: 7nm Intel: 14nm
Intel, for the first time in its life, is nowhere near AMD. They will only get a little closer in 2022, not 2021.
Who cares about 2021. Its dead.

Allow me to introduce you to Ms flight simulator 2020They're significantly weaker cores though and I do suspect we'll start see PC ports start getting more CPU bound as the generation progresses.
You will be upgrading your graphics card before you upgrade your cpu if its a 6 core 3600 or better for gaming. By the time your 6 core needs replacing, the 8 core will not be very far behind for replacement either. Also as the 5000 series is the last of the AM4 socket whichever cpu you buy and eventually replace, it will also require replacing the motherboard and ram. So unless you're playing competitive world cup grand finals esports and you need every hertz of performance, you will be fine with 6 core until your next major upgrade cycle.
Question,
With the new consoles using 8 core processors... For the master race, does it not make sense to go for 8 core with the assumption that dev houses will now try to utilise 8 cores +? Which would mean in an upgrade we should exclude the 5600?
Some games, like The Division 2, already use 12+ threads. I think Troy Total War used all 32 threads on the 3950X (for grass simulation on max settings)
PCs could always compensate with higher performance cores, but I guess we'll see how things turn out.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X have 3700X CPUs, but at a 100mhz or so slower, and with less cache.
So I do think that 8c16t is the way to go. That said, buying according to what you think will happen is usually a waste of money. Rather buy a new CPU when yours start to struggle.
See above, i5 3570k.
My stuff is super obsolete, so in my next purchase should I be shooting for 8 cores, even if its 2k more costly? The right answer is most likely wait for reviews![]()
They do. Consoles are optimised on a hardware and software level for the specific task. Also completely different memory architecture. But of course this was a previous generation of architecture so can't really compare with current gen.Do they though? Do piledriver modules really count as 2 cores each?
