Unseen load-shedding disaster warning — four substations explode

Four mini substations in Johannesburg blew up on Thursday when Eskom restored power after scheduled load-shedding, causing several areas to remain without power even after their rotational power cuts ended.

Infrastructure damage like this, caused by load-shedding, resulted in some areas of Gauteng remaining without power for extended periods, City Press reported.

According to AMEU, municipalities struggle to restore power supply after scheduled load-shedding, which results in significant infrastructure damage.

Solution: Don't flip the ON/OFF switches like you're closing the door of your friend's car, comrades!

Yes, a decent one in the DB board. Those surge protection multiplugs are a waste of money.

Agreed.. the multiplugs are just pointless.. Hell I took a "surge protector" plug to pieces the other day and there is no way in hell it would protect against anything.

Learned something today, an organisation that is not in the news all the time, because it deals with infrastructure and not politics:
Association for Municipal Electricity Utilities (AMEU)

Their general statement though is on the money, but its not unseen... As residents in the cities, we've been experiencing it for years.

LS for 2 hours, then either power for a few seconds/minutes before the substation goes pop and you're out for 12 hours, or you get no power at the end of LS and the guys have to replace the stolen cables in the substation and you're out for 12 - 36 hours.

Its not only the surges. In 2015 in Montagu, the power went on/off on/off at least 10 times on a Monday morning after a load-shedding session

Hundreds of people's electric devices, computers, fridges, the cooling system at Checkers (24 coolers) went down and the cost exceeded R22m

Eskom denied any liability, blaming it on smaller switching stations

In my own house, the dishwasher, microwave, TV and media player, pool pump, aircon for the garage, garage door motor and about 5 lights all stopped working. The insurance claim was R43000

Not only in JHB - yesterday a major line fault/transformer failure in CT saw to it that the CBD was without power for many hours. ---- This LS BS is triggering all sorts of failures --- hard lessons being learnt about inrush current and instantaneous overloads are becoming very frequent.

1) Let's stop using the euphemism "load shedding" and call a spade-a-spade it's "electrical blackouts"

Unseen load-shedding electrical blackouts disaster warning - unseen by who?
We all know the problems caused by turning off/on electrical appliances.
Why we having scheduled electrical blackouts in the first place?

Here in JHB South we have scheduled electrical blackouts and no water for 4 days.
No water 4th- 13th July 2021
No water 26th August- 2nd September 2021
No water 10th March 2022...
Don't you just love the progress we've made since 1994?
South Africa is such a wonderful place what with the sunny weather /s.
Some call it a sh-it-ho-le.

How is it unseen? We've known it for at least a decade and a half. The cost to infrastructure and the economy is more than what it would cost to keep it on permanently but no, they put a cap on what Eskom is allowed to spend.
