Amobia Uncapped & Skype

Hi,

I have an Amobia 3Mb Uncapped account for which I am very satisfied. The only issue I have is the Skype. I have 2-3 times a week a conf call with Europe or US and almost every time the person at the receiving end complains that my voice keeps cutting delays and so on. This with or without the video on, actually worse with the video on, which makes sense. On my side the side the audio/video is fairly good.

I have reported many times this issue to the support desk and I must say they are very helpful and trying to help. We changed Skype port number, took a network trace, tweak things here and there but the end result is still the same 8 times out of the 10 the connection is bad for my counter party. Looks like some issue with my upload link, proxy, filtering...

I have an Amobia Capped account for low latency stuff and basically have to use this for all my skype, with the cap no issue, video and voice are very clear. Just frustrated eating my cap at R100/GB for a basic thing like sykpe.

Just wanted to get a feel from other Amobia users and skype. What is your skype connection like? Do you use it regularly, local or international, what account have you got?

Thanks for your feedback.

Hey, only had my Amobia connection for a day or so and haven't used Skype yet.

I'm not sure if this will apply and maybe I'm completely wrong, but have noticed when doing a speedtest that depending on which IP (Internet IP, as uncapped is private IP) I get assigned from Amobia the connection is often very different. With one IP I can get constant 1MB/s up and down, but with another its a bit unstable and the ping's will differ from 25ms to 80ms?

Maybe this is due to the contention ratio on each line and depending on which one is "overloaded" at the time will assign a different IP?

When my wife has another chance to Chat to a friend in Singapore I will ask her feedback on the connection.

Its the same when downloading...depending on the IP the speeds will also vary.

Anyway your views?

Thanks MDE,

Concerning the speedtest you can use test.amobia.com this will only test the wireless link. I get about 2.8Mb on download and upload, which is very good. I guess the test server is before the gateway to mWeb. Now if go to speedtest.net and try any servers in Cape Town. The results fluctuate a lot between 1 to 2.3Mb for download. The upload is the worst as I barely get 0.2 - 0.3 Mb.

Concerning the IP address, I don't check it since I am on a LAN and use a router to connect to the CPE.

Hey,

I am also going through a router, but I'm talking about the Mweb IP address'. When you run speedtest.net look at the bottom left you'll see the IP address of the Mweb server that Amobia use. Now i've done a few tests yesterday evening and the IP address changed twice.

I tried to do Skype, on receiver's side voice is also breaking.
It's to do something with P2P upstream shaping (and Skype is P2P). Similar thing for P2P based games (commands are not getting through).

Im not so sure about that. As the Mweb guys (clients) dont complain about any sound break up.

I've got a feeling it might be the proxy...but obviously one will never know as we cant get to it. When running a tracert to mweb I see there's one more link before Mweb's IP which in cape town is
cpt-nas-r1.amobia.com [196.32.232.133]. Not sure if that is the next tower I'm connecting to or the proxy / dns?

It has something to do with the proxy, before I joined Amobia last year, I got in touch with somebody on the forum who was using the service. It was great and excellent feedback. By the time I joined they had put a proxy in place and this is when the problem started. He also confirmed afterwards that he experienced much more issues then in the past.

It is really a shame because they have such a good service and support.

Just had a phone conversation with Amobia, they are working on the skype issue which requires new lines to be installed in the CPT data center, approx deadline 2weeks.

@psudan (and anyone else on uncapped) - off topic, but seeing that you also have the uncapped package, have you ever reached your rolling window and been throttled? I'm on the uncapped 1mb and have done 7gigs already without any sign of slow down. I think on the 1mb line its suppose to be 4gig over three days? No complaints just curious...since maybe they have lifted it since Mwebs true uncapped policy?

The new system/configuration is in place and as of today my Skype conversations are very clear. Excellent service and follow-up from the Amobia team.

The Skype port must be set to 12784. Goto Tools - Options - Advanced -Connection

Sorry to bump this - but how has Amobia treated you recently?

I am looking at getting their service to replace my terrible iBurst connection. I need it to work from home: constant VPN connection to our servers and Skype / Google Hangout calls daily with my team in the US - so Skype and Hangouts really need to work. Video is kinda a requirement as we do screen-shares (although I can imagine it uses less bandwidth than webcam style video).

No plans to torrent (although I wouldn't mind being able to) and no plans to game on it. Still need to decide if I want uncapped or capped.

Is the connection symmetrical?

For myself Amobia has been really great. Get full line speed anytime of day on 2mb line (symmetrical)

Not sure on Skype but VPN is perfect.

If you need a ping or trace route just shout.
