South Africa's digital TV failure — 12 missed deadlines and almost 12 years late

South Africa recently missed its 12th deadline for the switch-off of terrestrial analogue TV broadcasting signals that will mark the completion of the country's migration to vastly superior digital transmissions.

The switch-off will also free critical radio frequency spectrum for mobile operators could use to improve network coverage and capacity in South Africa.

Digital what? The 2000's called, they want their digital tv back. Geez, talk about flogging a dead horse. We must be one of the only countries in the world that took so long to implement a technology that it became completely irrelevant before we even did it.

Honestly, the only solution is to just forget about the whole thing now and continue building up an IP-based broadcasting system. Digital TV is yesterday's news, fast going the way of CDs, tapes and vinyl records.

There are 3 different world standards, and I think SA was still hovering between two of them. Which all sparks uncertainty around investment and standards etc... I think even the pilots are now offline as their periods had passed.

At one stage they wanted the voters to pay for that box, and then force the tv license on the people.

Shouldn't all those involved be charged for dereliction of duty and monies clawed back ?
How can this waste of our money be allowed?

I mean sure I had forgotten this was even a thing still. Are they still blaming others
Duh. It's Jan van Riebecks fault the digital TV hasn't rolled out properly. But don't stress though, the SABC boards order for LV handbags has shipped on time

How can we expect them to get this done if we do not pay our TV licenses?

lol, this is beyond a joke, it's not even worth trying to introduce humour here... these people are so pathetic.

At this point I'd put good money on this migration never happening while the ANC are in charge.

It shouldnt happen ever. Time and money is better spent on internet conectivity than DTT.

Openview decoder is great backup for something on your screen when streaming goes to sh#t because of internet.

Plugged mine in again. Some extra channels added from when I last viewed.
