MTN's Telkom buyout could be bad news for data prices — Analyst

Consumers should not expect price cuts on mobile data or voice calls should MTN's proposed acquisition of Telkom go ahead.

That is according to World Wide Worx's Arthur Goldstruck, who spoke to Sunday newspaper Rapport.

FWIW - I would bet money that MTN's deal will only be about Openserve, Giro, and BCX. There is no way the CompCom approves anything that includes Telkom Mobile.

Best-case scenario:

• Telkom's wholesale and enterprise assets go to MTN
• Telkom's ISP goes to another suitor that can take over its DSL, fibre, and LTE subs (Afrihost, Vox, Webafrica, RSAWeb, and Mweb come to mind)
• Telkom Mobile goes to someone like Rain
