Caucus agrees, amongst others, with the findings of the committee that Advocate Pikoli has demonstrated a scant regard for matters of national security, which made him unfit to hold the office of the National Director.

Lack of sensitivity to national security issues was one of several adverse findings made by the Ginwala Commission of Enquiry against Advocate Pikoli.

It is our view that due regard to matters of national security is an important quality for the post and one of the factors necessary for determining whether one is fit and proper to hold the office.

The committee will recommend in form of a report to the sittings of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces this afternoon that the decision by the President to remove the National Director be accepted by Parliament.

Caucus supports the decision of the committee.

National security? Who are we at war with at the moment? What integrity are they trying to protect?

Shouldn't it be Corruption Security?

Interesting times.

The National Assembly ratified the dismissal of prosecutions chief Vusi Pikoli on Thursday, after a raucous debate in which the opposition warned he would win a reprieve in court.

"Pikoli is going to win this case and once again it is going to be shame on Parliament," Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille said, adding that MPs had failed to review the matter properly.

"This is a simple rubber stamp."

Tertius Delport from the Democratic Alliance added: "This Parliament cannot in good conscience take the step to put the final nail in the coffin of a man who has not and cannot be shown to have acted in derelection of his duty."

The vast majority of MPs voted in favour of a report by an ad hoc committee dominated by the African National Congress endorsing Motlanthe's decision in December to fire the National Director of Public Prosecutions.

Pikoli's fate will be sealed and President Kgalema Motlanthe free to appoint his successor if, as expected, the National Council of Provinces, also endorses the decision to fire him.

But the former National Director of Prosecutions has signalled he will fight for his job in the high court and warned Motlanthe not to appoint a replacement.
