ANC promises no more 'jobs for pals'
The ANC plans to ensure that the practice of “jobs for pals” is something of the past and said it would review the government tendering system to ensure that it is not abused.

This was one of the key promises made by ANC president Jacob Zuma in presenting the party's election manifesto on Saturday afternoon.

Zuma will on Monday hear whether he will be recharged on several counts of corruption, fraud and racketeering when the Supreme Court of Appeal makes a finding on this matter.

Zuma addressed an estimated 70 000 ANC supporters who gathered at the East London Absa stadium and the Jan Smuts stadium.

“The ANC will step up measures in the fight against corruption within its ranks and the state. This will include measures to review the tendering system, to ensure that ANC members in business, public servants and elected representatives do not abuse the state for corrupt practices. It is imperative to ensure that politicians and civil servants do not tamper with the adjudication of tenders. Measures will be taken to ensure transparent process of the tendering system as well as ensuring much stronger accountability of the public servants involved in tendering process.”

He also said that public servants must be deployed in “correct positions” and if this is not the case the government must implement measures through training and redeployment.

“This means we don’t deploy and redeploy our friends,” Zuma said.

Zuma said state owned enterprises will play a crucial role in job creation and infrastructure development, but he steered clear of calling for the nationalisation of former state assets such as Sasol.

He treated the crowd to his trademark song Mshini Wam and danced with young female performers while displaying his singing prowess.

When he finished his speech he accidentally threw in a “Viva Congress of the People Viva” in between the usual slogans and had to sheepishly explain to the crowd that “you are the congress of the people”.

The ANC recently aborted a court battle with the breakaway Congress of the People (Cope) over the name of the new party.

Zuma also said the implementation of the child-support grant must be linked to compulsory schooling while a national health insurance system will be phased in over the next five years. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme will also be reviewed.

So it was fine when there was no competition in politics but now that they may just lose their 2/3rds they say they are willing to cut back on the buddy/buddy system.

Reading between the lines I think it is the current ANC top members that are upset about the ex-ANC members (now part of COPE) that won all those tenders.

So, the contacts that were awarded to COPE members will be canceled and a new process will be followed to assign the work.

You don't need to be a genius to know who is going to benefit from the new tender process...

the NP did it too, waaaaaaaaaa

And weren't they just a wholesome pillar of morality...

But that is your point? Because the NP did it, it is OK for the ANC to do it too? Interesting analogy though, drawing comparisons between the racist party of the past and the racist party of the present...

It's funny how now all of a sudden they're making announcements about how they were corrupt and how they won't be in the future...mmm...election speak. I think COPE is getting them a little worried.

I thought that was the most interesting part of the article. It displays his real intelligence.

what i mean is people are acting like it's new, when it's happened before and they never complained coz it made getting jobs easier for them :) of course they're racist, not full out blown "look at those stupid crackers," but in their attitude.

I think that this in ANC speak actually means: 'Vote for us and we give you nice job'.

This coming from a man who is not currently in government but has a 32 car, government sponsored, entourage driving at 180km/hour through Limpopo a couple of months ago.

you would have to be a moron to believe this rhetoric.

Who is acting like it is new? How is bitching and moaning about it considered a denial of the past?

and they never complained

Utter bollocks - you clearly don't know much about the history of this country if you believe that no whites complained. However bringing up apartheid is hardly relevant - this is happening in the present and people are bitching about it. Regardless of who you might believe benefited in the past, it does not justify inaction on anyone's part in the present as some sort of apathy vote.

of course they're racist, not full out blown "look at those stupid crackers," but in their attitude.

We agree partly on this, however they are full-blown considering the public nature of racism that takes place on a daily basis...

The day the ANC stops giving tenders and positions to their friends and family is the day the ANC is not in power anymore.... Maybe they are not so sure about the election anymore:p

Anyone else spot the typo in the thread title? Isn't it meant to be no more 'jobs for pales'? :D
