You can only say they retained Joburg once they have formed a coalition.

What happens if they don't get a coalition of 50% + 1?

This is a possibility given that the EFF are not going to sleep with the ANC... Or maybe the IFP might?

They won, let's stick to the facts.

They didn't...they just get more votes than the rest. The facts are...DA + EFF alone is 49%...plus there's the rest of the scraps.

Besides, the debate is around the headline, which is a blatant lie.

By your logic the DA didn't win in Tswane or NMB. You can't have it both ways.

Sure they don't have 50% and will likely lose out on coalitions but that doesn't change the fact that they won Joburg.

The ANC got the most votes out of the parties contested, they didn'nt win schit and they sure as hell did not retain it. You can't win without 50 +1, there's a difference between "most votes" and "won", geezuz, i don't know how to explain simple self-explainable things.

Try to think for yourself, don't let the headline dictate your thoughts. I know it's a foreign concept in the age of the almighty "trusted source", but try.

The ANC won Joburg. The DA won Tswane.

Even with having won the majority in Jozi, the ANC has lost another good 10% and it is starting to look very dim for them for 2019. The initial predictions in January 2016 was that the ANC will lose 5-8% per election and it would take a good 10 years for an opposition party to come in - this picture has dramatically changed and I doubt the ANC will maintain national leadership in 2019.

The party would have to make some dramatic changes (scrape e-tolls, fire Zuma and fire most executives in parastatals) in order to restore confidence. Considering their arrogance and lack of leadership/vision, I doubt this will happen. I hope that in Jozi the DA, EFF and IFP form a coalition and EFF/IFP help the DA understand how to properly address housing/basic services for people who have been sh*tt*** into buckets for the last 20 years under ANC rule and restore dignity to people having not received what was promised by the current government for two decades.

my thoughts:

now we see who becomes who's bed-fellows.

ANC gained a majority. But if the others band together the ANC will not run that metro.

unless the ANC is first to take at least one bed-fellow.

I'm sure the next two weeks will tell...

Here's the bottom line... To take control of the Joburg city council a coalition requires 135 + 1 seats (136).

This is the final seat allocation:

If the EFF do not go into a coalition with the ANC, this is going to be VERY messy for the ANC!!!

And what will happen if the EFF refuses both the ANC and the DA's courtship?

How will a decision be reached then or will the city remain in limbo for the next 5 years?
