What a total Eskom power blackout in South Africa would look like

During a media briefing on Tuesday, Eskom CEO André de Ruyter reminded South Africans what a total blackout of the electrical grid would mean.

The state-owned power utility announced a sudden increase to stage 4 load-shedding this morning after Majuba unit 5 and Tutuka unit 4 tripped.

He said bringing the grid back online if Eskom can’t maintain a stable frequency will take a week or longer.

The ramifications for South Africa’s economy would be disastrous — which is why Eskom resorts to load-shedding to prevent that from happening.
You'd think fixing things would be the solution. How this failure to course-correct has gone on for so long is mind boggling - the state lacks the competence to fix one of the most fundamental services in the country. The ANC & this bullshit 'democracy' that props them up all the time can gtfo.

“There are procedures and protocols in place to do a black start. This matter has been carefully thought out and procedures put in place,” Yelland assured.

Wonder if there is actually a procedure in place...

Last time we had this article someone mentioned that we have one main black start site and it was currently off line.

Difficult to do when everyone is trying to sabotage your work.
That's probably true, but the bigger issue that any Eskom CEO faces is trying to balance availability of supply with maintainence schedule. Ie How much supply can be taken off the grid at any one time for an extended period to do said maintenance, but also avoid causing or exacerbating load shedding.

This would be a non-issue if the likes of Medupi and Kusile did what they were supposed to (create a supply excess) when they were supposed to, but we all know how that went.

Instead for over a decade Eskom banked on those 2 stations and deferred much of their maintenance to a point where breakdowns were inevitable, making the balancing act above even more precarious because there is now a huge element of unpredictability.

Point being: There is no person out there that can take Eskom's generation plant and maintain us out of the sh*t in under 5 years and without government support in reducing the energy burden via major policy changes.

I love the way they say “eskom was forced to implement stage…”

Who forced them? The aliens?
