Not at all, you misunderstood. He said it has everything to do with price, nothing with the OS. However (anecdotally) more flagship expensive Androids are sold than iPhones, so it seems the OS is indeed important.

iOS isn't the beloved stand-out mobile OS it was when it launched. I'd say the 3 big OSes are much on a par, and it's down to personal preference.

I agree that personal preference is probably the most important. I just fear that many people stick blindly to what they know and never experience the advantages of the alternatives. Having said that, once you are into an ecosystem, it is very difficult to migrate. I am so deeply anchored into Google's services on Android that it would be a massive pain to move out. With all the sync and backup options available, my handset is only an interface. No contacts, data, pics or videos will be lost if the phone gives up the ghost or grows legs.
