MonoChoice again... making examples of people to get publicity. Need to appease the angry shareholders so they are hoping to scare the other pirates into getting a new shiny DSTV subscription and the shareholders can once again proceed to make their choice from the 2023 Benz catalogue

In South Africa, watching, owning and being in possession of pirated goods / movies / series / music is not a criminal offence and police cannot even seize these goods from you.

You are immediately in contravention of the Copyright Act, the moment you distribute, sell or give these goods to or access to it to a third party.

As you will notice in this case, they have gunned for this guy, but they will do nothing to the people who are now watching it, as it is not a crime for the clients of his.

A suspended sentence means our film and publications board are not serious about piracy

Yeah, I am surprised they did not make an example of him with a direct imprisonment sentence.

Can the boffs explain how he did this?

Probably used an app(s) which has the IP Address loaded for streaming DSTV content without permission? There are a few IPTV services abroad which has DSTV channels, including Supersport bundled in their packages. I can only assume he sold boxes with these apps which had these channels preloaded.

Pretty simple. Kodi etc. has a lot of plugins where they stream content.

As part of the deal, the company pleaded guilty to breaking the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, and enabling the piracy of channels like BBC, Sky Sports, and movies and TV shows via XBMC (now Kodi).

he was selling modified Android TV boxes that allowed for streaming copyrighted content
how the hell is that piracy?!?

in that case ALL ISPs across the globe are pirates, after all they provide internet access which "allows for streaming copyrighted content"

It's pre-installed plugins, which are illegal

Seems like sole purpose for this it was modified for pirated content.

So I was right (I did some reading up about this case)... MonoChoice chose to make an example of this guy. As they have done in the past.
MonoChoice are a real bunch of scumbags, losers, that go and have people nailed because apparently their little empire is so fragile that people streaming stuff from the internet (outside of normal channels) get prosecuted. So they actively go out looking for targets, why am I not surprised. W@ankers...

Can't compete because they're cocksuckers, so they resort to running to mommy (the courts)

MonoChoice has a long history of doing this.. back in the 80s they had people locked up for just opening their M-NET decoders. Fortunately that BS has now been dealt with by case law in SA.

IP addresses? No wonder he got caught. Guy never heard of a DNS...

Dstv must have greased a few palms to make this case a priority, just think of all the far more more serious crimes that brazenly go unchecked day in day out but the guy selling Android TV boxes on Gumtree gets his head near bitchslapped off his shoulders..

NOPE...He got a suspended sentence for RICA FRAUD.

Pure propaganda
He was sentenced for contravening section 45 of RICA., a "Prohibition on manufacture, possession and advertising of listed equipment"... how is that fraud?
