He was sentenced for contravening section 45 of RICA., a "Prohibition on manufacture, possession and advertising of listed equipment"... how is that fraud?
How is that dstv piracy?

Ok, ok...lets call it then "contravening" RICA. Happy? Point is, he was not found guilty for pirating or selling dstv content, but was guilty for selling what it looks like non-icasa approved goods...which is committing fraud.

A listed device should by law be a device capable of intercepting communication, thus in this case a television stream. The big question though, was these boxes ever declared a listed device and if so, what was the requirements? I assume it will be a listed device only when an app is loaded which is capable of streaming channels like DSTV then.

I would like to see what the Minister declared in the Gazette.

so now there's a gap in the market?

sell the same thing without plugins pre-installed, with a fat warning that: "it is illegal to use plugins such as xyz to pirate DSTV content and please DO NOT follow the simple instructions on website blah.com to install them"
huh ? big difference

So I was right (I did some reading up about this case)... MonoChoice chose to make an example of this guy. As they have done in the past.
MonoChoice are a real bunch of scumbags, losers, that go and have people nailed because apparently their little empire is so fragile that people streaming stuff from the internet (outside of normal channels) get prosecuted. So they actively go out looking for targets, why am I not surprised. W@ankers...

Can't compete because they're cocksuckers, so they resort to running to mommy (the courts)

MonoChoice has a long history of doing this.. back in the 80s they had people locked up for just opening their M-NET decoders. Fortunately that BS has now been dealt with by case law in SA.
You seem to have a problem with reading and understanding the article. It's NOT ONLY MC.
And they have every right to take action against piracy as the wish.

If you believe DSTV there are a 100 million TV pirates in the country, but somehow over the course of many many trying years, they have only managed to get 3 cases to court, under the piracy banner.

An effort to be commended.

They probably get to their claimed number by doubling the number of SABC pirates who don't pay their TV lisence.

As you will notice in this case, they have gunned for this guy, but they will do nothing to the people who are now watching it, as it is not a crime for the clients of his.
Yeah... it is telling to me that they nailed him under RICA and not the Copyright Act.

Just a heads up! If you want to pirate something, please have some decency, and don't pirate DSTV/Multichoice crap! I mean to say! You will not be respected for doing that!

Wasn't RICA thrown out to some extent? I wonder how that would impact a possible appeal?

That may be so.. my problem is that MC comes across as the AUTHORITY on all these matters, they walk around like they're the main man regarding this. That is my problem. They do not represent the whole industry even though they think they do.

Seems monochoice doesn't learn from history. This idiotic tactic sounds similar to tactics employed by RIAA vs napster/pirate bay ect. History shows what utter failure those were...

Its not working on my LG TV or on PC for me
Okay so im not alone with this.

activated showmax pro specifically for the WC, and its not streaming in 4k on my LG OLED.

Tried with the PC and xbox...only option is max bandwidth definitely not 4k

however,4k on dstv now (channel 216) is streaming perfectly ...however, someone is already using the 1 stream.

If i knew Showmax pro wasnt going to work, id have subbed to dstv now compact for r360 and got the WC channel.

Has anyone else managed to get showmax to stream 4k? what devices do I need
