We expect Microsoft, despite its slow start, to have established Windows Phone as a relevant smartphone platform by 2017

Hmmm.... A company that probably did some actual market research, or the blog post of an iTroll? Tough choice.

Analysts and their predictions hey. What can you do.

I don't believe either of them have done any proper analysis.
That being said, the big guy is often wrong (And Gruber tends to keep track of them being wrong to rub their noses in it. Which makes for funny reading)

Bloomberg - "Apple will sell a few to its fans" http://daringfireball.net/linked/2012/05/02/a-few-to-its-fans
Crackberyy - "Top 10 reasons why the iPhone is no Blackberry" http://daringfireball.net/linked/2012/05/01/blackberry-claim-chowder
Businessinsider - "iPhone dead in the water" http://daringfireball.net/linked/2012/01/24/blodget
etc etc

Oh I didn't mean I believe the first one either. I find the 5 years thing a bit funny, how do they know it won't be 10 years, or 2, or 1? What mysterious event is going to happen in 5? It's just that I'd rather trust someone who might very well be wrong vs someone with a very clear agenda.

BTW the first prediction is kind of true, they just didn't know that pretty much every technologically challenged person on the planet would become a fan. :D

All depends how the other OS's evolve vs Android, anyone stagnate and they will be dead.

Its truly a good time for consumers when it comes to mobile phones as the direct competition pushes all the makers to their limits. From Samsung to HTC to Apple and Nokia, they all fighting for our wallets, I just wish they would leave the dam courts out of the fight and just focus on software + hardware.

+1 I agree, the competition is anything but clear at the moment.

We have 2 leaders:
1. Samsung appear the have the lead is phone sales (US sales figures contradict this?)
2. Apple have the lead Ito industry profits.

I hope we never end up with only 1 winner; I much rather prefer Microsoft and BB to also deserve market share.

I.e. more competition means we'll have less disappointments like iPhone 4S, iPad 3 and the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S3 --- all IMO failed with crappy or underwhelming upgrades.

The S3 is not all bad, I would just have changed 3 things to be honest.

Better body, my word did they get a 12 year old to design that ****? If I look at Nokia Lumia, iPhone and my future Xperia S I just have to wonder what was Samsung thinking?
Better Camera, I mean come on thats like old tech you have there, we know you can do better
Better GPU/CPU, did they have to use the old MALI chip-set.... Again? Yes I know it rocks on the S2, but come one I wanted a Exynos 5250 with Mali-T604 <-- I have a feeling this is what the iPhone 5 is gonna get.

The same can be said for Apple re not all bad; I still think they're all underwhelming :(

The S3 looks "OK" now, but how is it going to look in a few months when Apple drops its new gadget (keep in mind Apple tend to make major changes each 2nd year -- if they don't then it will confirm we need more competition, I.e. they're both becoming complacent)

Yeah, I hope they increase the screen size at least. I really really hate the small screen they sport currently, but I guess its only me with my large hands, on the same note thats what I dont like about the S3... its to large :)

Yeah you guessed it I am a 4" - 4.3" fan.

They can go 4" without increasing the body much, just make screen with almost no bezel.

Anyway, I ordered my Xperia S so no more new phones for me for the next year :)

The width I wouldn't want affected re I much rather prefer the current size (large hand but just like how easy it slips into pockets.

The approach to increase the height could work for me & pushing the screen closer to the edge.

Anyway Apple have power problems; it's clear to me at least why the S3 is larger I.e. you need more space for battery when you have a hungrier CPU and RAM.

Apple will need more space to improve the overall battery life when they move to the same CPUs as for the iPad 3.

I agree with you.
However calling the iPhone 4S a disappointment is disingenuous as it has been the best selling smartphone ever.
And you can't call the Galaxy S3 a disappointment either. We have no idea how the market it going to react to it yet.

What I can say, in my *opinion*, is that the HTC One S, is a better Android phone. Whether my opinion ends up reflecting reality, I don't know

It's a perspective thing; of course from Apple and Samsung POV the devices are very successful; but let's be honest that from a customer's POV the device is less than a stellar upgrade.

Fyi I had the iPhone 4 and now own the iPhone 4S so yes I'm part of the stellar statistics, yet I'm honest enough to say I was disappointed.

It's not from Apple or Samsungs perspective. It is from the markets perspective. The invisible hand has spoken, and judged the iPhone 4S as the best (from the markets perspective, quality is measured by demand) smartphone ever.
And we have yet to see what the market says about the Galaxy S3.

Just because you or I think they are disappointments, doesn't make it so

What's clear is that Apple's stalwarts will buy anything Apple and so too for Samsung stalwarts buying anything Samsung.

If the phone was truly such a stellar delivery then please explain the following contradiction:
When Apple fails to meet it's quarterly results the stock market react negatively; yet the iPhone 4S was depicted as underwhelming ito expectations, by most editorial articles.

Similarly Samsung's S3 is also being recorded as a less than stellar delivery, but nevertheless it will be a stellar marketing success for Samsung (Market share shows us that Android users prefer Samsung).

Anyway that's enough said on this topic, in the end it's a perspective thing -- you have yours and I have mine.
