Anger as car hits child in Du Noon

While Mnandi Avenue has yet to be repaired, irate residents have vowed to continue digging up roads to protect the lives of their children.

"A neighbour saw the car speeding and he yelled at the driver to stop as kids were playing in the road.

Seems rather wrong. When I was little, I got a hiding when I got near the road because it was dangerous. Here it seems the roads double as kids' playgrounds? There is no order here.

Agree. As a kid you we were not allowed in the raods. Walk into the road and prepare for the hiding of your life.....oh I forgot, these days giving a child a hiding is also not allowed anymore:eek:

Why are they letting a 3 year old boy cross a road?

This seems more a case of child neglect than car problem. We use to play in the street but not at 3 years of age!!!

The incident seems to have taken place in a township where the streets are generally the only open area for children to play.

The driver was very very lucky that the mob didnt kill him.

You have to wonder about parental supervision especially for a three year old

I am glad the kid wasnt to badly hurt

He was very lucky not to get killed, both the driver and the kid.

In South Africa I'm sure it is allowed?

They want to bring in a law now that will forbid you to give your child a hiding...
No wonder there is no discipline under the children these days:eek:

there should be rules of the road for pedestrians rather than drivers, i remember when there were fireworks at or near canal walk last year and a child was hit by a car when a bunch of them went to watch, what the hell were they doing on the N1 anyway, the law says NO pedestrians unless that has changed now.

IMO, this not a case of bad parenting, but a case of reckless driving. The driver was speeding in a residential area, and it seems that the residents have applied to the municipality for speed bumps to be placed along the road.

I have lived in both townships and suburbs and playing in road in both areas has been done. Either playing cricket in the suburbs or soccer in the township.

This is what I don't understand. Yes the driver should not be speeding, I agree. But what the hell are the children playing in the street for?! It is against the law to play in the street, so it isn't just the driver's fault. The children shoould not be in the street in the first place.

I'm not sure how easy it is to actually speed in Du Noon ... I've driven through that township a number of times ... and the streets are pretty narrow and twisted. The main road itself is a major road which carries a ton of heavy and light vehicles - and I see kids dashing across that road on a regular basis (Potsdam)

Even going 60kph in that area would seem dangerously fast - so the driver probably wasn't speeding ... but it would have seemed like it to any bystanders.

Nope, bad parenting. We didn't play in the road when we were 3.
