Seeing as we can't solve the problems in Zim, and that the Zims seemingly have free access to SA...

if we were to annex Zimbabwe would it be beneficial for SA and the Zim populace ?

We would no longer have the refugee problem, we could turn the land back into the breadbasket it was, we could offer better health, improve the financial fiasco etc etc

I know Bob won't give it to us but just thinking hypothetically.

No.

Hardly any infrastructure left.

Waste.

The only plus, is that there is nothing, so you can try to do stuff right from the start. I'm sure the World Bank will lend you the funds to kick-start the country again, and if they won't somebody will give it to you.

Will still take years or decades to get everything going again.

Seems like a bad idea to me, the SA govt. can barely run SA and Zim would be a massive drain. Rather deport the Zim refugees, seal the border and set up refugee camps on the Zim side of the border.

We could send Malema there - they are used to his kind.

It's only costing us money for the refugees and sickly people already here. That's nothing compared to what it will cost to get Zim up and running again, because then you have everyone else and all the sick people in Zim as well.

Terrible idea.
It will be much better to wait for all the Zimbos to leave, and then we can start a new country there.

I think my first question would be, what natural resources does Zim have that could have long term benefit. Does Zim actually have anything?

Well they have a big gas bag, I am pretty sure the amount of methane this man sprouts could very easily be the solution to our energy crisis

We gave zim 300m a few weeks ago

Yeah ... but that goes towards food and medical aid, it wouldn't even touch the infrastructure.

Might seem like a nice plan, but then honestly all of Zimbabwe's sh#t would become our sh#t - and as someone said earlier, our government can barely deal with its own country.

As a note about resources - I don't know about minerals, but I don't think Zim has much in that arena, but as a food production center it would probably stop our need to import grains whenever we run into a deficit, we'd probably have extra to export.

Anyways, any annexation would have to be military, which will only get the world up in arms (and making statements, something they all love doing), which would cost even more money.

So I agree ... lock the border, send all the Zimmies home, and tell them to start solving their own problems. It sounds harsh, but no-one forced them to become independent and put Mugabe in power. Just shows how much crap hero-worship can get you into.
