Cape Town - Two groups of tourists were robbed of their personal belongings at gunpoint in Langa township, said Cape Town police on Wednesday.

In the first incident, seven tourists were robbed while leaving the Chris Hani Independent School in the township on Tuesday afternoon, said captain Elliot Sinyangana .

In a report on Wednesday, the Cape Argus said five Germans and two British nationals had just made a donation to the school when a gang of armed teenagers pounced on them.

They took their belongings, including cash, and only left when pupils and residents gave chase.

Hours after the armed robbery, another group involving 40 Dutch tourists were robbed while leaving a restaurant in the township.

Why don't they employ a guard. Even one with a small 9mm would do the trick.

It’s unfortunate that they were robbed. Visiting a township as a Tourist is not just another casual visit. I also learned that when I was robbed my Timberland boots in Minneapolis, USA.

We are always going to be on the spotlight for one thing or another regardless of 2010. Maybe, the criminals need to be represented in the 2010 LOC:)

I wouldn't be surprised that these tourists were informed about the risks. Most of my overseas colleagues are obsessed with visiting townships here despite of the risks.

Yeah most are aware of the risk.

Apartheid left the legacy that a township visit is cool when you visit SA.

Go see some wild animals on your safari, then poor people watching in the cities. It's a bit unfortunate, but when you visit a 3rd world country you want to see some serious poverty, so you can go home thinking, "Man, I have it good."

(I am not making a racial comment. please don't relate wild animals with people who live in townships)

Tourists are bringing something to the townships that the govt isnt - MONEY..

"Hours after the armed robbery, another group involving 40 Dutch tourists were robbed while leaving a restaurant in the township. "

40 tourists leaving a restaurant?
That restaurant owner must've coined it that day..
hmm true BEE? :)

Yeah, I still don't get why going to the townships are cool - if the tourists were told the real facts about them, they wouldn't go there.

I wonder how the donors feel now that they were robbed while trying to help uplift the community. I would ask for my money back straight away.

I get the feeling that this has been happening often but weren't "bigger enough" for the newspapers to report.

Probably, its getting so bad that most crime doesn't even make the papers anymore because its too "minor". I've also heard that CT Tourism does its best to keep as much out of the news as possible so as not to harm the city's "image".

It's all part of the Africa experience for them. If they didn't get robbed, what would they tell the people back home?

Because in any other country, barring perhaps Columbia, it wouldn't be neccessary. In this country, however, I'd want a guard with an LM-4 or an R-1 at least...

only thing that i see, is that these tourists will return home and spread the word of what happens to you in SA.

For those pro 2010 ppl, this is a solid blow... Few more of these kind of attacks and 2010 will be long gone.

Of course then he might be attacked just for the gun...

Townships are large communities of mostly ordinary hard-working law-abiding people.

Tourists go there to experience the culture, and there is nothing wrong with that. It's also a way of getting money into the townships, and yes, it probably is the second example of true Economic Empowerment (taxi's being the first) (as opposed to BEE, which is a synonym for corruption, IMO).

Tourists in a township do stand out, offering an easy target for criminals.

And if the people in the township decides to do something about it and moer the criminals to a pulp, the police get all upset.

There are plenty of examples of "clean-ups" in the month before a major event.
Expect to see a massive crack down on crime, vagrancy etc in the month before the World Cup. Thats when it will have the most impact.

And that is the biggest problem of all - instead of fixing the problems they are just going to make sure they don't happen when it can embarrass our esteemed leaders.

After the world cup though the country can go straight back to hell though right?
