Another food price shocker on the cards for South Africa
Stakeholders in the agricultural sector raise the alarm over possible price for certain food groups in South Africa.
It's strange... raising the alarm is usually a call to action, to avert an impending criminal act or to arrest a criminal where a crime has already been committed.
I agree, though, there is a need to raise the alarm. But what action is being called on? And by which stakeholders, exactly, since aren't we all stakeholders in the food production industry?
Out-of-control prices (without a corresponding increase in quality) are usually an indicator that the market is cornered. Which, in turn is an indicator of anti-competitive action.
This is fortunately quite easy to trace back to its source i.e. State producer-protection, parading as State consumer-protection.
We
all hold a stake in the agricultural/food production industry. Don't we
all have something to lose by having the market cornered with the help of the State? Judging by the thread-title, it looks like it.
