I said it just before elections. GVT brought the price down just before elections and i said it would increase just after elections. They just did it for votes. Bastards

Only boycot international companies like BP and Shell and use local like engen or sasol fuel. So much for the people going on about our economy being in the best state ever although I agree with some of it but before 1994 we were able to get a full tank of petrol for just under 50rand

More the goverment I think. Last time I checked South African made, Sasol fuel was being sold in Botswana.. at a 1/4 of the price here where its produced..

Of course I dont see Sasol complaining either :(

Sasol is restricted by government to sell their fuel in SA based on the crude oil price (as is all the other petrol companies that trade in SA)

If the market is opened and these petrol companies can compete on price, we will definately see a drop in price.

afaik, USA petrol companies (BP/Shell included) competes in price.

They supply most of our nieghbouring countries.. same as Eskom.. give everything way and dont keep enough for us.. does that sound about right.

And I think AR is right with regards to petrol pricing in the USA as well, I do know that petrol is cheaper at different times of the day for them in certain states, its most expensive during peak hour traffic situations, and cheapest at 12:00 am - 3:00 am at night

edit As a side note.. WTH is diesel more expensive to buy when its half the cost to produce? or why cant we buy biodiesel in this country :(

Nope, you are wrong. SA government regulates the petrol price (not the oil price). The oil price is determined by supply and demand in the global oil market. All the major oil companies trade using the international oil price. However, some countries (like Venezuala) offer subsidies to oil companies in order for them to split the price between local and international. No such subsidy exists in SA.

The price of fuel is mainly determined by governments (like petrol in SA), oil price (diesel in SA) and refining capacity. If government decides to deregulate the fuel price, the fuel companies (often subsidiaries of the oil companies) will be able to compete on price. However, this price will still be strongly linked to the oil price and R\$ exchange rate, since SA imports about 60% of all its oil.

By importing most of our oil from Iran, as we still do.

The production capacity of the synfuels plant in Secunda is about 150 000 bpd (The plant in Sasolburg doesn't produce oil anymore). SA requires about 500 000 bpd to keep the refineries running. There is absolutely no way Sasol can supply all of SA's oil needs, unless a massive capital investment is made to build more oil from coal factories.

ummm how many cars where on the road then?

how many cars are now on the road?

must be between 3-5 times majority of our population lived in poverty, didnt have the right to buy a car

now think about how many ppl own a car today

there is no possible way sasol could sustain the whole country for a long period of time

interesting point there i never knew that :) rkott
