Domestic worker cleans the house (3 bedroom occupied by SO, myself and 3yr old) and irons 4 times a week from 8am to about 1pm. We pay her R2200 a month but she is due for an increase soon. We would love to pay her more because she is brilliant and trustworthy but more than a 10% increase is not possible right now...

We are very generous with our leftovers to her and I try to give her a meat pack once a month to every second month.

What exactly is the relevance of the size of the residence or the number of inhabitants? I pay staff for a days work and as long as they are working at a fair pace I expect them to do a days work and no more. If they do not finish because the work load is too much then they starty where they left off in the morning.

We pay our domestic R200 a day, she comes once a week (for us) but cleans 5 of the other houses in the same road as me, so she probably makes R4000, she has a bus and a taxi which amounts to ~R20 a day round trip.

Our domestic worker works 4 days a week from around 8h30 to 16h00. We pay her R4650 per month.

*edit* she doesn't live on our property, so she has to commute from Soweto to the N. Suburbs which chows quite a bit of her income.

We pay our domestic R3500 a month for 5 days a week, she gets to stay in the zozo and use electricity for free. And she can help herself to any food except the sweets and chocolates(tho she never has, except the sweets and chocolates).
We are a family of four with plenty of animals.

Fair remuneration also depends on where you live as the cost of living can be considerably lower in small towns. So lets hear where you live as well. R200/day in Cape Town suburbs might be fair but in Blikkiesfontein R120/day would be fair.

Agreed, R100 - R130 per day is the norm here in EL considering shorter distances to travel for staff and lower coast of living (although our property prices are insane).

We pay pay towards the top of that range as Gonubie is a little way out of EL and our domestic has to catch 2 taxi's to our house and then 2 back to hers.

jeez, now I feel bad for not even having a domestic. You're running a full-time charity.

We pay R150 per shot, once every 2 weeks. It's a small 2 bed flat. Speaking to others I know this seems to be the standard rate.

R120 twice a week to do the washing/cleaning and then we sometimes call her in when we on holiday to look after the pets if the tenant can't.

4 Bedroom house and she works from 7:30 am - 2:00 pm, just my mom and I here and she eats what she makes for my breakfast and lunch and uses R10 for taxi return.

Her boyfriend works and makes a bit of money in Durban to support her, her mother and children.

So the culprit has been identified.

After offering to help her try to plan better, so she can save and try to be in charge of her finances and going through bank statements.

It turns out she has been lending money to other people, running out of money, coming to me, I give her a few hundred here and there, and then she gets paid back. She of course then spends that money on whatever she wishes to. \

At the end of the year I have to give her an increase (of CPI + 2% = 8% in total).

So have offered her a 12% increase now.

Has she paid you back the money she owes you?

I would give her an increase of CPI + 2%, then deduct monies owing from that increase until its all paid off.

We pay our domestic worker (housekeeper and child-minder) R5150 per month - 5 days a week - 8 to 4. We pay all her transport over and above that amount (around R400/month). She is fully responsible for the children when they are home and spends the remainder of the day/s cleaning our home, washing, preparing food for us to cook in the evenings (i.e. chopping veggies, etc.). Quite happy to hand her the keys of our house and disappear for a week as a paid house-sitter (our pets love her too). She is 100% trustworthy, takes initiative and is not intrusive in our belongings - i.e. won't vroetel through our personal stuff unless asked to do so. Bliss!
